YACT: Starter died, but...

So today, on the 4th of July, it appears my starter is shot. The car has a brand new battery, and upon turing the ignition you just see the lights come on and hear nothing or just a small click. I'm getting it towed tonight.

Here's the weird thing. Six years ago, on the 4th of July, when the car belonged to my father, we were leaving the fireworks and decided to stop for Dairy Queen. Then the starter died, as well, and we had to get it towed.

Three years ago, on the 4th of July, the first summer I owned the car, the same thing happened at my aunt's house when we were there for a picnic.

And now today, three years later, on the 4th of July, SAME THING, only this time at home.

Three 4th of Julys, each separated by three eyars, the starter has died in the same car. Now how in the HELL could that just be a coincidence.

on july 4th too apparently...

Since this is the antithesis of being patriotic it must be a treasonous starter. I've reported your car to the State Dept. and the Dept. of Homeland Security.

Weird. Don't use a junkyard starter this time, and check your flywheel.
I don't know what kind of starter they put in it when it's brought to the shop. How long should a starter last normally?

Hum, that's in the Ford family. My brother used to have a Ford Escort and I shortly owned it for about 6 months myself but that then went through about 4 or 5 starters in time that we owned it.

Maybe it just a issue with the quality of the started they keep giving you, maybe ask if you can have a better or upgraded started installed this time?

Well I did bring it to a different shop this time, so...yeah. They probably have one-year warranties, right?

3 years on a refurbed starter isn't that bad. Remeber that the original probably lasted 8 years, so you have to decide if it's worth it to buy the cheap ones again versus a brand new one.

The guy just called me at work and said it'd be about $177 or so including labor. I didn't ask whether that was new or refurbed. I'm guessing it's refurbed and that he'd recommend against buying a new one just because of the age of the car.

How much more do you think it'd cost for a new one?

Ask around, and never settle for one quote. Prices vary more widely on new auto parts than most people might think.

Edit: If you're in Central Florida, I know a guy who has hookups on everything car-related if you want a good deal.

Can someone tell me how many starts new/refurbed starters are typically rated to last? Or is it more by number of years and not necessarily by number of starts.
