YACT: Spark Plugs for a 97 Camry 2.2ltr

My roomate wants me to change the spark plugs in his Camry, I have no problem doing that but I cant seem to find the torque specs for the spark plugs :| Google has not been my friend today.
Also I was wondering what a good alternative to the stock NGK sparkplugs would be, at $10 a plug they are just too expensive.

Edit: So the ATOT consensus seems to be that I dont need a torque wrench and I just need to hand tighten the plugs. So what about some alternatives to the $10 NGK plugs?
 
Make them hand tight
Bosch are decent NGK alternatives. Although I use nothing but NGKs in the I30.
 
Hand tighten, plus a quarter turn with a socket wrench is the rule of thumb.

$10/each for NGK plugs? I've never seen prices like that at my local Autozone.
 
According to his Camry's owners manual it requires some sort of double platinum plug that looks like This
And the cheapest I have been able to find this plug is $10.
 
Hand tightened should be ok...start the plug in the block using your hand or a spark plug boot (I prefer the latter) and be sure to do it on a stone-cold engine or you may crossthread it...and that is not an experience anybody wishes to repeat.

10 bucks is a bit high.. even my NGK iridium plugs only cost me 6.99 and those gave my car a big difference
 
Ok, not to sound rude, but I know how to change the spark plugs, I just want to know what the torque specs after hand tightening are. I dont want to strip the threads in the head and end up owing my roomate a car.
 
Well, call me a hack (though I really don't consider myself one), but in my 18 years of being an ASE tech, I've never used a torque wrench on spark plugs.
 
I have the specs for my 93 camry. Wonder if they're any different.

I just got bosch 2 plat or something last time. They were pregapped.

EDIT: Haynes says 13 for my 5SFE 2.4
 
Yeah, I paid about $10 a plug for the NGK's in my Honda. Just regular old platinums. OEM is usually the best choice for plugs.

no they didn't.

If you're going from crap ones to OEM plugs 9 times out of 10 there will be a big difference. My last engine I went from Bosch Platinums to OEM plugs and it ran better then when the Bosch's were new. Plugs definitely matter.

Yeah, usually you tighten between a quarter and half turn after its finger tight; quarter for aluminum heads, hallf for iron.

The ones that are in the car are OEM platinums, but they are 60k miles overdue for a change.
