YACT: some tire questions

so when I brought my car to the dealer couple of days ago the guy said I only had 2 mm left on my threads, how long will this last me?

I have low profile tires on my car (330ci), I will replace them soon but want to know how soon I need to do that.

Also which tire should I get? are the expensive ones really worth it? I can get the kumho tires for much cheaper than a potenza so3 or a pzero, are the expensive ones that much better? I dont really race, just need something that is comfy and has good thread wear.

Also I live in CA, so dont really need tires for winter.

The most expensive ones may not be the best, and may not be the best for your specific car & suspension setup.

One very very important thing to remember is the BRAND means little. You have to consider the actual model.

For instance, the Kumho Ecsta V710 are absolutely incredible (at least in terms of grip), but the Kumho Solus KH16 suck.

How much do you want to spend? What size are your stock tires? How many miles do you expect them to last? Do you care more about grip, or noise?

If you're looking simply for comfort and long life, there's no need to go for something as sporty as the Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions. Go for the rather inexpensive Kumho Ecsta KH11.

You want a comfy tire with good treadwear and you're looking at PZeros, S-03's, and Kumhos? That's like saying "I want a small, efficient, commuter car" and then saying you're browsing Hummer H1's and Peterbilts.

None of those three tires you listed are "comfy", and none of them have "good tread wear". Get a set of Touranza LS-V's. Much better treadwear, much more comfortable, and cheaper.

*shakes head* Looking at max-performance summer tires and wanting good tread life... *sigh*

Well, if he goes to Ultra High Perf. All-Seasons there is a good compromise. I had Kumho Ecsta ASX's on my last car. Treadwear rated 400 but they still gripped like crazy. I had them on for about 10k miles and the tread looked excellent.

Of course, the sh!tty Bridgestones on my new car are rated 190 and have zero grip.

Hit up the BMW forums and read the tire threads/forums there. That will give you the best insight into what is the best for your car (in popular opinion).

2/32(1.6mm) and you're legally required to change, but at 2mm, your wet traction is already reduced compared to new tires and you might as well change them now before you crash in the rain.

How many miles do you drive a year?
You don't need super high treadwear unless you put a lot of miles on your car, because rubber doesn't last for ever regardless of how much tread you have left.

Pirelli P-zero Nero tires are supposed to be good all-seasons. If you get little to no snow then look at summer tires. They generally offer the best wet and dry grip due to the fact that all seasons need multi directional tread vs summer tires that have a V-tread which are great for rain and dry.

I have Fuzion ZRi's on my car and they stick great. For reference I have a Grand Prix GTP that puts down about 325 ft-lbs of torque at about 2000rpm. So if they stick for me Im sure they'll be plenty of grip for a BMW 330.

You've gotta decide weather you want tires that'll last or perform.

I use yokohoma DB2 ultra summer sport's and I'll probably have to throw them out before the one year mark 😉
