So here is the midsized sedan roundup for the VW basher's viewing pleasure. Click

V6 ranks #1 over the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord V6.
The 1.8T is #2 and only ranks behind the Accord EX 4 cyl beating out the Camry 4 cyl.

I got a 4 banger accord so I'm cool with that. :p

The passat costs north of 30Gs, it's 4Gs more than the accord. I guess that's alright if they like it, seeing that it costs 15% more. That kind of pricing puts it closer to the TL really.

Read my response in that thread as to why the Passat rankings were so low, and why it shouldn't deter any reasonable person. I explained it there.

You'll have to pry our Passat keys from my wife's cold, dead fingers! :p

VW sucks. I'd never buy one. I bought a brand new 2003 Nissan Maxima SE with moonroof for $22k back in April. Why would I pay $8 grand more for less car?

You'll get to know them more personally from those frequent visits.
Who knows, maybe you'll even get to know them by their first name. :D

What are you trying to say? Your point isn't real clear...who will I get to know personally from frequent visits?

My Passat was 22K including sunroof, leather, heated seats, anti-slip regulation, alloy wheels, better steering, better suspension, and a nicer interior. The only thing the Passat gives up over the Maxima is horsepower. Compare apples to apples here.

The Maxima is a great car, but your reasoning for saying, "VW sucks" is just plain ignorant.

My mom, my aunt, and cousin all own a Passat and they never had a problem with them. The only problem that they had was with my cousin, as her's was a 1.8T and needed to replace coilpacks after a misfire in cyclinder 2. Let me remind you, they didn't charge anything for it. She didn't have to take the car down there. Dealership sent their tow truck, and they towed it to the dealership for free.

My mom's V6 is close to 40k and never had a problem. Even better, my aunt's was driven across the country twice in a month, and is close to 80k miles and no problems!

Good job VW!

Maxima is not even in the same class as a Passat....so no point in making comparisons. The old Maximas where indeed good cars, but the newer ones have been plagued by all sorts of performance problems. They are kinda like Japanese buicks with torque steer.

The Passat is a fantastic car, its built like a vault, excellent composure in all situations, great ride compliance, steering feel, (though the brakes are a bit soft). It even has a nifty flip out key!!!!. That said, I still like the Camry better.

I said that mainly to satisfy fyleow's taunt to the VW bashers.

Truth is it looks like a nice enough car. I've never driven one but having had bad experiences with older VWs I don't think it is a car I would consider buying. My wife had a Golf that was falling apart by the time it had 100k miles on it and I know a couple people who had major issues with the Jettas. Just my .02

I like the Maxima quite a bit. It is powerful, comfortable and fun to drive. We have almost 10k miles on it now and only had to do oil changes on it. Still drives as nice as it did when I drove it home from the dealer 9 months ago.

Camry was actually more expensive and looks funky IMO.

I have moonroof, power everything, CD player, keyless entry w/alarm, 17" alloy wheels, HID headlights, foglights & a trunk spoiler. I paid $22k with 1.9% financing for 5 years. I think I got a pretty good deal on it.

VW is not so bad. I used to have an 1987 VW Jetta GLI. I used it to commute to work from LA to Tucson for more than 2 years, racking +350,0000 miles with no problem. The car still run fine at 460 K(still with the original transmission and engine)when it was wrecked by a woman I let borrow the car.

I have a Passat GLX (V6) wagon, and have driven Nissans. The Nissan felt, well, cheap. I am somewhat amused by the comparisons between the two. Perhaps we ought to do Camrys and BMWs too, since they are also in the same class

those old VWs are kickass. They weren't plauged by any problem really.

My uncle had an 88 Jetta diesel..that things had 350k+ km and was running like a champ.

You know VW is bad when even the folks over at VW Vortex bash VW and their sales/customer service practices. Hell, even germans rank VW as being crap:

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1134108

German drivers rank German car brands bottom of customer satisfaction league
The 38,454 members of the ADAC, Germany's largest automotive club, who responded to the latest half-yearly survey put Volkswagen as No. 31 and Mercedes as No. 32 among 33 brands on overall customer satisfaction. Only Land Rover was worse. But if satisfaction with service is eliminated from satisfaction with their vehicle, German drivers ranked Mercedes-Benz last among all brands.

Uninformed opinions are worthless, so who cares what you think? What do you know about the Passats?

I know that the same consumer reports that rates them high as family cars, then they don't even show up when it comes to the most reliable vehicles:

http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2003-11-03-reliablechart.htm

I do know that the Passats smaller counterparts get R@PED though...

I'm an Audi fan too, but after seeing all the horrible quality ratings for VW products as well as the complaints of how VW dealerships have screwed people over COUNTLESS times over at VW Vortex, I'd NEVER buy one.

How am I supposed to know why it's not on this list? I can't comment on a USA Today article. Show me the source CR article that this list came from, and there you'll probably find an explanation why the Passat isn't listed here.
