YACT: So Tempting...

I have a GM Card which gives me 5% back on all purchases toward a GM Car. Well right now they sent me an offer to increase my available discount to $2500. While I know GM constantly throws incentives around all over the place, what is nice about this incentive is that this gets applied after you have whittled the car salesman/dealership down to their lowest point.

I've heard of plenty of people whittling down dealerships to $26-27K for a MSRP $33.5K GTO (they are currently offering $3500 incentive cash back). If I could walk out with one for around 27K, I could then use the @2500 incentive to get it well under 25K. That would be one sweet deal for that car.

They also have a lot of great incentives on other cars as well as trucks. So tempting. If I didn't need a truck and didn't want a '05 Tacoma so badly...I might just bite.

GM neutered the GM card earnings. The earnings amount you can apply to a vehicle are terrible anymore. On some of the high priced SUV's and full size pickups they'll let you use up to $2500 in GM points, but on the less expensive vehicles they'll only let you use $1,000-$1500. Don't let that big number fool you.

Head to www.gmcard.com and look at what they currently promoting for allowances.

Of course I would...but I've used the GM Card incentives before...they aren't trying to trick you or anything. I had no problems before. You just set the price with the dealer, and right before you write your check...tell them to drop the amount by your $2500...and you're good to go. On your next GM Card statement, you're accrued "savings" will just be at 0.

We picked up a Chevy Venture for $17K CDN after GM points (and a trade-in, but that was $6500 CDN).

You are correct on a normal basis, but when they run promotions like this, they are much less restrictive. for instance, if you look at the maximum amount they let you use toward a Chevy Colorado right now, they say only $1K, but this promotion specifically gives the Colorado as an option for the $2500. The GM card works just like any of the other GM incentives. You need to pick and choose when the best time is to use it. If you're patient, you can get a lot off of a vehicle.

When I bought my Yukon, I was able to shave almost $10K off the price of if because I waited for a similar incentive and took advantage of dealer incentives on top of it.

By the way, because of the incentives, I was able to drive my Yukon for a year, racked up 24K miles on it and sold it for a "profit" (about $2K more than I owed on it). I would have kept the Yukon except that it was a gas guzzler and I had changed jobs and was commuting...it became very impractical.

I feel ya. It is tempting. They have a nice black one near by with 6-speed. I know if I went in for a test drive...I might walk away with a car...so I need to keep myself from doing that.

I bought a used '99 Mazda Millenia S. I racked up over 56K miles in 2 years, but now I have a short commute again to work...and have been sorely missing a truck (I'm constantly having to borrow or go with friends for various activities I partake in).

That GTO would be nice though.

With a GTO, you won't miss a truck or those activities...

I won't miss them until the day they revoke my license for speeding too much.

I already get enough tickets with my Millenia and its supercharged engine has nothing on the GTO. I don't mean to go fast...I just find myself doing it "unconsciously". I probably should have bought a radar detector a LONG time ago.
