Summer's almost over too.. only 3 weeks left. I'm sure you can search for computer in car installs and find several in ATOT.

So sell the computer and use the money to buy a CD-MP3 deck. You get the functionality from the computer, plus you also get controls that are easy to use and an installation that looks professional.

Sell the mustang you are rebuilding and just buy one that is the same year with all the mods already done.

i already have the money for a cd-mp3 deck with aux in, etc. the point is to spend some time and effort to do it yourself. this is gonna be in a car that my parents have no intention of trading in. its gonna be one that i drive until the day it dies. so i might as well as try and do it myself just to say "hey look, i did that myself". kinda like the satisfaction you get from working on your mustang to make it better.

Well, it's your project, and if you want to, go ahead :)

But from what I've seen of these kinds of projects, the only ones that I actually like are EXPENSIVE. Those touch screen LCDs are like $500, and that's just the display. And really, none of the other interfaces seem to be worth putting in the car over just buying a standard head unit. But that's my opinion. If you do mold a touch screen into the dash, that will be cool and I'd like to see pics :)

Do a search, someone posted a thread, with images, on this subject recently.

Do you have a laptop? I used to connect my laptop to my car stereo via a cassette adaptor. Recently I got an Alpine unit which has an AUX, now I connect my laptop using the AUX cable.

Keep us updated, I like the idea, and think it's cool.

Are you planning on putting in a full sized LCD?

I bought a single board computer with a Celeron processor on ebay for < $100.

Yes, it will run Windows. My plan is to put Windows XP Embedded on there.

I bought a GPS module mady by RoyalTex for $60 or so at www.w-innovations.com.

I got freeware GPS software from www.gpss.co.uk.

All I need now is the time to work on the project. Ideally, I'd like to find a sound card with radio tuner and I can use the computer to play MP3s, CDs, tune the radio, watch DVD's, and navigate via GPS.

Like MeanMoesh, my project is just a "because I can" project with no loftier goal than just making a carputer for the fun of it.

Here is wat you will need:

1) A computer
2) A car

Make sure you have those before you start.

What are you going to use for a display?

I want to do this, I have a cargo van I've been threatening to convert to passenger duty for a while & have lots of room for this kind of project...

I have no clue! :)

I'm going to cross that bridge when I come to it. Daylight readable LCDs do appear to be rather expensive, even the OEM parts with no bezels or cases.

mp3car.com forums would be a much better resource than anyone at ATOT. The only real problem with putting the computer in your car is the powersupply. There is a company that builds computer power supplies for cars, so that is a good way out, or you could be really creative.

Sky is the limit. I wanted to build one this summer for all my music/music videos/dvds, but I decided to get nice comps instead.

Dan: I'm not going to have a computer with VGA output and use a wimpy NTSC LCD screen. That's sacreligious. :)

Also, daylight-viewable LCDs, from the little research I've done, are much more expensive than the NTSC specials you find out there.

That guy with the Jetta used a regular PSU and an AC invertor because it delivers more constant power or something. That's what I use. 200W invertor and a microATX psu for my VIA EPIA. Not fully functioning yet though.
