YACT-Smokes on start up

OK, i'm looking at getting a 88 firebird V8 305 TBI. The only thing wrong with the engine from what i was told is that the car smokes from the tail pipes when started. Is this a valve guide problem since it apparently stops after the car warms up or would it be a piston ring??

I haven't bought this yet but if it's a cheap fix then i'll def buy the car.

I would have to valve guides based on the description.

If it is valve guides seals, the fix should be under $500.

valve seals. Usually not a problem assuming you have an air compressor, valve spring compressor(can be borrowed from most auto parts stores) and a weekend. I need to do the ones on my 4.6 sometime soon, but with the OHC design it makes it a bit more interesting.

better yet, take out that slug-like 305 and put in a 383 😀

Just get the heads reconditioned. Chances are it is both guides and seals. 305s are notorious for head issues.

Trust me, I want to, just costs a lot. Hopefully the deal on a 88 that already has a 350 in it goes throu.

Firebird GTA?

The 215 hp TPI 305 isn't that bad an engine.

I wouln't even bother fixing it till it unless it was real bad. Just keep saving up for a 350 🙂. My old galaxie with a 390 had NO valve stem seals and smoked liked crazy when you fired it up but was fine once it warmed up. I found the valve stem seals in the oil pan in hundreds of peices when I rebuilt it 🙂.
