It's not the usual squeel you hear when breaks are going....more of a grind...seems to be getting a little worse. Time for new brakes?

Roger beat me to it. I would remove the wheels and take a look at the brakes.

thanks guys. how much something like this usually cost? never had to get brakes done before....

$69.99 per wheel for a shop to do it, if you do it yourself, $15 per wheel.

You better take a look now. It sounds like you might have to get the discs/drums resurfaced after you replace the brake pads. Grinding is metal against metal. Very bad.

On the 96 honda accord I used to have I bought brake pads at autonation for $7 a wheel and rotors for $12 a wheel.
Also, since your down to grinding, I'm assuming the rivits in the brake pad have started digging into the rotors, so you will probably need new rotors.

Doing brakes yourself is easy if you have disc brakes, just make sure you have someone with you thats done it before.

my car grinds occasionally off and on.. the pads are about 80%

i guess the metallic crap sometimes acts up and makes noise more than other times.. it's kinda odd!

Hopefully you didnt grind into your rotors, that will cost a little more.

If you're lucky, you're only down to the wear indicators. Basically a thin plate of metal that will rub against the disc with the intent of making a god awful racket to let you know that your pads are almost f**ked. I've heard some pretty horrendous noises coming from my brakes with no damage done. Those things are pretty effective.

My sentra did this and it was because the rotors were worn to hell. I needed new ones. However, the maxima sometimes does this (for a while it was doing it quite a bit, but has since let up). I've checked the brakes and had the pads in my hands and confirmed that they, and the rotors, are in great shape. I still don't know why it grinds sometimes, but seems to prefer doing it after some heavy braking or semi-performance driving. The stock 00 maxima rotors are notoriously bad, so I guess they could be at fault, though I still don't know what is actually causing the grinding.
