I wouldn't wax every 3 three months unless you are somewhere where the weather or pollutants, etc. are really harsh. Waxing too often can strip layers off the paint and cause the problem you're trying to prevent.

Really? 😕
How does that work? I thought waxing put a layer of protection over the paint?....
I don't think any paint is ever removed when you wax...? Wouldn't that kinda defeat the purpose?
That's what I've always heard. Anytime you wax you're removing a little bit of the clear coat, especially with those cleaner waxes. Do it too much and you can strip the finish off. My dad knew a guy who'd wax his Vette several times a month and the paint ended up looking like crap (this was about 30 years ago though). I dunno, maybe it's not true anymore with modern paints and waxes.Originally posted by: Eli

Are you sure you're not getting confused with buffing/polishing?Originally posted by: Heisenberg

I don't think so, although obviously using any kind of polishing/rubbing compound will really take the paint off. I could easily be wrong. The next time I talk to the guy who painted my car I'll ask him.Originally posted by: ThisIsMatt

Waxing your car does not strip off your paint anymore than waxing your floor strips off linoleum. It really bothers me when people post something that they heard once from some person who isn't even educated on the subject, and act as though it's factual solely because "Some guy I knew once said...."
Wax does not strip your paint. Something like polishing compound will, but they're two entirely different things.

No, too much wax will not hurt your car, however too many coats of wax at any given point in time will diminish the shine on your car.
A "true" wax will not strip any paint off your car. However, if your wax has ALOT of abrasives *cough nufinish*, then yeah you'll start wearing the paint down.

That kind of what I was thinking. Sorry for the confusion.Originally posted by: NeuroSynapsis

hey r u in socal? do u know any good detailing places??
Yes, notfred because we all know you are the ultimate authority on all things automotive, and you've never been wrong. For the record, my information came from someone who's been waxing and detailing cars longer than you've been alive. However, it's been about 6 years since I had the discussion and the fact that only certain abrasive waxes will do it escaped me.Originally posted by: notfred

Sorry, I only know people in OC
Why do you want to detail your car anyway? All the dust will just cover it up in about 5 minutes =P
