YACT: shopping for car battery...which chain-store has the better battery?

the battery in my 01 frontier died today. i don't drive it much and don't plan on spending the big bucks on an optima. i've had good experiences with the Nascar brand from Kragen which recently changed to Autolite i think. Then there is the Autozone Duralast battery, and Sear has its own, and Costco has the Kirkland signature battery...

which battery would you people suggest? should i stick with the Kragen Autolite instead of shopping elsewhere?

thanks

Any Firestone service center will have Interstate batteries. Interstate makes some of the best, arguably the best.

I would go with an Interstate or an Optima red top. I have used Interstates for the past 7 years or so (in HOT weather) with great success. I put an optima in my jeep about a year ago and no complaints so far. (I think they just recently got 5 year warranties)

A lot of places sell optimas but my experience was that the price varied WILDLY. One place wanted $175, the place down the road wanted $125 - for the SAME battery.

I perfer Interstate. Get the highest CCA (cold cranking amp) you can find, can't have too much! I tend to stay away from walmart Everstarts (Neverstarts).

kmart also carries Diehard (Sears) brand batteries. However, they are a little more expensive than your run of the mill cheap batteries (champion, interstate, etc.).

I've had good luck with Sears Diehard's & with Interstate as well ... if the car does a lot of sitting, the best way to make sure the battery lasts is to disconnect the positive contact when its not in use because most new cars draw some power while parked.

Had a cheap $40 walmart battery in my car for over 2.5 years before it died. Just had to replace it today. Replaced it with another cheap walmart battery. 😛

Last Interstate I had lasted 9 years. Over time, you're better off going with the more trusted brands.

AC Delco for my last car. Was the OEM battery in my Honda as well.

Pffft, I tossed that pile and installed an Interstate Megatron Plus. It's got 1000CA's and 800 CCA's. I replaced it because the alternator took a dump two months ago, I guess the alternator killed the battery.

Make sure it's not too big, though. The higher the CCA, the bigger the battery.

Can't blame the battery for that😉
