I have a 97 Mitsu Montero with a set of 1.5 year old , 31x10.50, BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires.

Between the speeds of 55 and 65, I usually experience somewhat shaky steering.

At all other speeds the steering is smooth as silk.

Any ideas why this is happening ?

Great...called my car guy, and he sais I can get the wheels balanced for $39.95.

That price sound fair ?

That's a fair price and should fix your problem. Shaking between 55-65 is almost always unbalanced tires.

What typically leads to the wheels becoming un-balanced ?

Just wear and tear on the tires ?

Pretty much. Or hitting hard bumps, potholes, a curb, or a previously-installed balance weight could have fallen off.

Mine are balanced and still do that between 55 and 65mph, but in my case it's because I let it sit on one spot of the tires too long & flat spotted them :(. Only way to fix it is new tires, but the mech. says they should smooth out as the tire wears some, and it has gotten better.

you have never experienced a drive shaft that is too short, or poor geometry on a solid axle vehicle. :D:Q

You drink to much coffee before driving that fast? :D

With offroad tires, wear can cause more balance issues than a normal tires due to the size of the tread. My buddy has some serious offroad tires that are always causing a vibration when driving. We have reinstalled his OEM size tires when he isn't offroading and the vibration is gone. I personally think the tires are crap, but he swears by them.

The technical definition of balance is the uniform distribution of mass about an axis of rotation, where the center of gravity is in the same location as the center of rotation.

A balanced tire is one where mass of the tire ? when mounted on its wheel and the car?s axle ? is uniformly distributed around the axle (its center of rotation). Balanced tires can spell the difference between a positive and negative driving experience. Drivers of new, high performance or luxury vehicles may be more sensitive to imbalance problems, but no driver is happy with an annoying vibration.

Now you owe me a

I'll buy you a beer when I understand why the un--balance creates annoying vibration ONLY between the speeds of 55-65 MPH. Why not at 75 ? Why not at 15 ?

because the vibration will be in harmony with itself and cause constructive interference.
