My dad has a 1996 Saturn SW1 (ugh, I hate that car). Well, the other day the trip odometer broke. He had just filled gas, and was pushing in the stick to reset it to zero. He said that as he pushed the stick in the numbers started to turn, and then it seemed like the stick unattached from whatever it was attached to. The stick went all the way in, but the numbers never zeroed out. Now the stick doesn't do anything when he pushes it, and the trip odometer doesn't work. The speedometer and odometer still work fine. Any ideas as to what broke, and how hard it is to fix? Thanks!

you probably need a new odometer and not only is it hard to do, there's some legal loopholes involved in doing so.

Legal loopholes? I think you're thinking about the odometer and not the trip odometer (or trip meter). The trip odometer can easily be replaced since it is built to be reset (so no issues with questioning the true mileage of the vehicle). You pull into a gas station, hit the little button, and the trip meter goes to zero. The odometer is the one that cannot be messed with. The trip-odometer or trip meter can be replaced. Since it is within 10 years, GM guarantees parts/service availability.

Call your local Saturn dealership (which you can find one here) and talk to the parts and service department to find out what your cost will be. :) Good luck.
