YACT: Salesmen trying to screw me?

I make over 40k per year, I am 20 years old and I look like I am about 15.

I went a test drove a Subaru Impreza 2.5I today. I told the sales guy I would be purchasing in the next 2 months and I WOULD be shopping around.

He quoted me $25080 for a complete base model plus tax and dest.

What I dont understand is, Subaru MSRP on their website is $23k and the cars at the dealership across town had dealer sheets that listed $23K on them.

This dealership had no dealer tags on them...and this salesman looked like the stereotypical simpsons/family USED car salesmen... Dirty white t-shirt, unkemp hair, ect...

WTF

uh this is not like shopping at walmart. so the other dealerships had it at a diffrent price. if you do not like the $25k price go someplace else.

hmm a salesmen with dirty clothes unkempt hair eh? i have been around car dealerships all my life and i have to say i have NEVER seen one where the salesmen where like that..

you went to a car dealer and you're asking if they're trying to screw you? that'd be like going to the dentist and asking if it's going to hurt

Sounds like he quoted you the MSRP + tax and fees. Did you just expect him to give you a super low price right off the bat?

Edit: Wait, was the $25080 including the tax and fees, or before tax and fees?

before...that is why it seems so strange...and he was the only salesman that looked bad...all others had business suits, ect... Dad works for GM and his dealershit everyone has a tie on...

I'd have to agree there. Where I work, doing that would get you fired.

so then you go to another place?

or perhaps like most dealerships; the price starts high and youre expected to talk them down.

also check the dealers webpage. a lot of times prices are listed cheaper on there then when you go to the place.

Use carsdirect or edmunds and figure out what the invoice cost is. Then use the fax/email attack method to email about 10-15 dealerships asking for a specific quote for your car.

Word it so it sounds like you know exactly what your are talking about (to do that research what kind of incentives the dealership gets for selling cars, holdback money, etc.). Throw all that stuff in the email and you will most likely be amzed at how many quotes you receive back that are cut and dry from the MSRP BS. Then use the lowest quotes and start bargaining down with the other higher quotes.

Research the subaru message baords and find out what others are paying for your model, and figure out when the 07's come out etc. Use all that in the emails as more fire power. You might find dealerships across the country selling them lower, email them too. Doesn't matter where you get the quotes from.

Best part about this is that you waste no time in the dealership putting up with their BS.

Well, it sounds like he knew you were just there to waste his time so he made sure you would leave quick. 😛

I told him straight up I was not buying until I test drove a Mazda3 and cobalt SS/SC.

I have the cash in hand and ready to go...He can think that I am not serious, but to be honest, it will lose him the deal...

BTW, the website says 23k starting...

Does anyone know if there is like an 'edmunds' in canada?

Usually they screwing comes from a low price for your trade in, dealer add-ons (pinstriping and undercoating) and finance extras (you do want credit life don't you?).
