YACT: Rubbing almost mettalic sound when driving gets worse when turning

Just today this noise has gotten extremely loud. The noise is a rubbing mettalic sound with the rotation of the wheels. The slower you go the less it happens, the faster you go the more frequent. It gets louder when I turn left or right and seems to be coming from both wheels. If I speed up the sound goes away, but returns when I let off the accelerator. Applying the brakes the sound doesn't go away or get louder so I don't think its those. Any ideas?

Either a bearing or CV joints. But CV joints tend to make more of a clunking noise.

Have the wheel bearings checked.

Worst case scenario if it's a CV joint: axle breaks at the joint and you lose power to the drivewheels and the flailing axle causes a loss of control.

Worst case scenario if it's a wheel bearing: wheel falls off.

EDIT: The worst case scenarios are indeed that and are somewhat unlikely, but it's not a safe operating condition for the vehicle.

A bearing can seize up REAL fast.
if its grinding gets too hot, then you'd need a spindle too and that isn't cheap.

Whats the typical amount to replace the bearings to take it to a shop? I have limited funds until next wednesday

Here is a golden opportunity for you to learn something about mechanics.

Dig out your jack, block the vehicle, take the wheel off and look.
Should be many people in your neighbourhood to explain what a disk brake looks like and where your bearings are.

If you were to buy say some SKS bearings or pads or unstick a caliper it would be dirt cheap and not too tough to do. Know anybody with tools? I've done my own brakes for years and have repacked bearings on my 4X4's

If I had someone knowledgeable about cars that I trusted here I would.

Are ball joints the same as wheel bearings? My Haynes manual has no mention of wheel bearings anywhere

nope, how about posting some info on the car, maybe give us something to work with

oh boy, your in trouble. you had better hope its not a wheel bearing

looking at 200ish in parts assuming the hubs are toasted. but the killer is going to be labor

getting that knuckle off alone looks rather unpleasent but then it just keeps getting worse.

if you ever have the need to make fun of a ford, just remember this. just about everything on a domestic can be fixed with some good swears, a few beers and a BFH.

cliff notes: grab your ankles

disclaimer: not a mechanic but i could be completly wrong about everything

I second this. My best friend just had his go, the really bad part is that he they were bad long enough to take the tranny with it.

how do wheel bearings take a transmission?

how loud is it? i have the exact same symptons in my car, but the noise is not extremely loud. but loud enough for people on the sidewalk to turn their heads.

Very easily... sometimes, if you let them go long enough, you end up with leaks in the headlight fluid... halogen fluid in particular is pretty expensive.

I would also check calipers. Also, you pads.
I am hoping that its it, is it normal for them to do this?
No. If it were the brakes, the sound would go away completely under braking. Since the sound does not change with braking, it is HIGHLY unlikely that it is the brakes.

Squeeking from a stuck caliper will not be noticeable inside the car with the radio on at normal volume with the windows up, and it WILL go away when the brakes are applied firmly.

Fix your bearings. Now.
