YACT: RPM goes up when brakes are applied...

Just as the title says although it goes up from about 500 RPM to 750 RPM. This thread explains what happened before. Right now, the car runs fine, except that it seems like I get a slight power loss from accelerating. I can barely feel it, but it's there. Anybody know if I'm just worrying about nothing or if there's a problem? Any help is appreciated again. Thanks!

Timing on new distributor is ok

Also, someone explain the core charge to me on a distributor. From what I understand, they want to charge me $100 for not giving them my old distributor. Basically, I have to give them my old distributor or $100 to shop with them, which they do NOT credit to my purchase, correct?

Probably from the power brake booster pulling engine vacuum. If your booster is functioning properly, I doubt you'd see it.....on a car that old, there may be a vacuum leak.
There should be enough vacuum stored in the booster to push the brakes 2-3 times with a decent amount of assistance.
Bottom line: Probably nothing to worry about. It also may be the indicator of the engine not running properly....maybe not enough for you to see a problem, but the brakes using vacuum may show it up.
Still, I wouldn't worry about it unless it gets a lot worse.

I agree with the above post. It could be just a crack in the supply vacuum hose to the booster or the diaphragm
inside the booster could have a leak. Look for a large rubber hose to the master cylinder, hopefully it's just a hose as the booster will cost ya. I have a feeling it's the booster.

I would take it seriously. Having the braking effort take a major jump just when you need it most will give a person
Ping-Pong ball eyes. ;)

I'd first check all of your vac lines first, then check sensors. I've seen bad speed sensors cause bogs or even stalls when coming to a stop, though I don't know Honda motors at all so I'm not sure what sensors to look at...

I'm guessing the hose will run me under $50 and the booster will run me an arm (possibly a leg also). *siiigh* The joys of having a 10+ year old car.

Yes, timing is correct. Should I just sell this car and get a new car? Maybe a cheapo Echo or something similar.

"When the brakes are applied", thats the phrase that would indicate the booster. Sensers and timing are out.

While warm and idleing repeatedly pump the brakes and see if it gets worse. If it does there is no doubt.

Ok, I was just out driving and the RPM goes UP from about 500 RPM to 750 RPM when I apply the brakes. Still same thing?

So there is a vacuum leak in the power brake system. Get a free diagnosis at a brake shop.
The leak makes it act like you've just cracked the throttle a bit.

Try this, start the car, shut it off, see how many full brake applications you can get. You should get two if not three.
Do the drill again, this time hold the brake applied for 10 seconds. You should be able to get as many as you did by not holding the pedal down. If all the vacuum dissipates by holding the pedal down the booster is a major suspect.

Ok, I just tried that. ONE time and no more vaccuum. After that, tried the other time for 10 secs and ONE time and no vaccuum. Looking like booster to me now. *siiigh* Should I just get a new car now?

How'd U fix it? New booster? Junked it? Sold it? Crashed it and filed insurance?

On a side note, Pepboys site sucks. Unless I'm blind, I don't see a SEARCH option. No price check on a brake booster. I did see a price on a page for about $180. :(

Core charge is like soda bottle deposit, except what you return is the old, failed part.
They use the old part to rebuild it and the part you're buying is most likely rebuilt on someone else's old core.

In fact, I'm not even sure if they'll give you credit for aftermarket distributor.

Did I hear you right, you are going to purchase another vehicle because of a failed brake booster diaphragm ?

Geez, get off you ass, go to your local junkyard, pick up a used booster for $25 and use that brain of yours to do some good.

if the vacuum leak is a problem for you just clamp off the hose. it'll be the biggest one coming off the booster. power brakes are a luxury not a requirment

You disconnect the booster on your car and drive like OrganizedChaos :p

My Neon has a problem similar to this. I just had the headgaskets fixed on it, there was a nice oil leak (common problem on neons) and while they were in there they replaced the timing and alternator belts, and put on new air filters, water pump, etc.

It crapped out on the road once after it was fixed, the alternator light came on...then my power steering seemed like it was gone. The engine was still running but all the lights came on a second later. I pulled it over, turned it off, turned it back on and it hasn't done it sense.

But when I crank the steering wheel around when parking, the engine sounds strained...the RPMs go up near as I can tell, but I usually am not paying attention to that while parking. I've noticed a similar thing happening when braking sometimes. The engine also just sounds a little off to me. I don't know anything about cars though.

I HAVE been using my brain, and thanks to everybody who has helped out. The problem is that I don't have time for my car to keep crapping out and giving me problems. I'd much better just fix this car, but I was just thinking out loud about some options. If there was no bus strike here, I'd gladly take the bus everyday to work. Also, I might as well pick up a new one anyway since my friend works at Acura. Junkyards are only good for decoration things (ie: gas cover, trunk carpet cover, etc). I would never get a junked mechanical/electrical part.
