YACT: Retarded Car Audio Stuff..

Scouzer

Lifer
Okay, I really don't know anything about car audio.

Buut I'm looking at a cheap little system as I've decided I'm going to keep the cheap '88 Chevrolet Corsica.

Jensen website tells you all the dimensions for speakers and such for specific cars...

6 x 9's I've bought

These speakers seem to require a lot of juice.

Deck that I've been looking at.

And I'm going to replace the front speakers with some very very bottom of the line speakers.

My question is, will I need an amp? I realize the power output of this deck is far below what the speakers are rated for. Will this seriously impair the quality of my sound?

Since I'm not buying a new car, I'd say I have a couple hundred dollars to work with...so I can buy an amp if absolutely necessary.

P.S. I'm working approx 41 hours this week, so this is not mommy and daddy purchased stuff for me. (For those of you who know how old I am)

Oh, and please don't flame me too badly if I'm an idiot 🙂

Stay away from Jensen. The 170W is max. You do not need an amp.

Well, if I do my choices for decks suddenly jump $130 or so...

Check out some of the Kenwood or Pioneer decks.

I'm Canadian, I'll look more, but my selection is seriously hampered. The border just isn't worth shipping stuff from the states.

I am very happy with my Sony CDX-CA710x deck. linky

Mine makes 52 watts x 4 max. I am still using the factory speakers and it sounds great. You don't really need an amp, but it would definitely improve the intensity of the stereo.

I paid $249 CDN + tax (PST/GST) with free installation at Future Shop.

I should have specified, I'm really looking for an MP3 Deck. I have a LOT of music and I'm going to be dealing with 40-50 CD's at any given time without MP3.

Maybe a disc changer is in your future?

Heh, thats after I convinced my mom to change companies. It was originally $3400/yr. I'm going to be on a seperate policy, but I have to be with the same company as my parents. This is with Driver's Training.

I can't look at Futureshop, its down for mantinence (sp?). I'll post some updates tommorrow.

Is Jensen really that bad? I realize of course its a budget company, and I get what I pay for...

I just don't know what decks fit my car. Most decks don't say their size...and it would appear one size does not fit all, or most.

remember headunit ratings are are peak wattage. not all that meaningful. rms rating is more like 17-20watts per channel.

thats why u have external amps.

front speakers are more important then rear, esp for stereo image etc. get components. rear speakers are for filler.

Any thoughts on Jensen? I realize its cheap.

MP3 Decks are expensive. But that Jensen one is cheap!

And I intend to fade my speakers to the back so the rear ones will be just as important.

Yes, Jensen is really that bad. I bought that exact same Jensen less than two years ago and it is horrible. First of all it seems to have touble reading the ID3 tags of the files and the display will often replace letters with random characters. It has had that problem ever since I got it. Also, the display is nearly impossible to read during the daytime because of the glare. Also, sometimes it would just freeze up and the only way to get it to work again was to take the faceplate off and put it back on. Plus it has no fast forward or rewind when listening to mp3 files. Then after about a year the volume down button broke and was stuck in the pressed position, making the unit completely unusable. I'm not the only one that has these problems either, read the reviews here. Spend a little more and get a decent brand. If you try to save money with this one you're just going to have to buy another one in a year anyways.

Okay, okay. You guys win. I've decided I'm just going to go with a regular CD deck as MP3 is too expensive for my blood.

I'm looking at these models:

Kenwood

Pioneer

Any further input on which deck I should get?

Thanks

Oh, and virtually any deck will have a front to rear speaker fade feature, correct?

Why are you going to go all cheap on your audio? Get a nice set of components, they'll blow the 6x9's away 😉

1) I have $2500 insurance to cover.
2) Gas
3) Cheap car, lots of KM = Hefty repairs
4) I want to save up for a replacement car ASAP
5) Misc Cash

= Not much left.

I don't want to invest any more then I have to on this car. I just want sound that will be acceptable at relatively low volumes.

Both decks I listed will fit in my car.

1) Don't see it, so what kind of car do you have?
2) Yes, Jensen does suck. Stay the hell away.
3) If all you want is good performance at low volumes, shouldn't the stock speakers be fine?

1988 Chevrolet Corsica.

The stock speakers are HORRID!!! Absolutely terrible. I'd expect the kind of crap they are in a 1950's Kia.

Oh, and as a comparison, my dad's 1990 Ford Tempo speakers sound LIGHTYEARS better. They are tolerable quality. The Corsica's are CRAP !!!

Rather than spend about $400 on crappy stuff now, then replace it in a year with much better $800 stuff, why not spend the $800 now on some decent stuff, then you won't have a set of crap stuff to have to get rid of!

You may want something cheap now, but when you want something better later, you'll regret buying the cheap stuff now, as it will end up costing you more later on.
