YACT: Resonator

Or something like that. The car rattles at certain times. It's very, very annoying. The repar shop told me to take it to an exhaust place.

What is a fair amount to fix that? My car is a 1991 Ford Festiva. 4 Cyl, single exhaust, manual transmission, front wheel drive. I think that's all of the relevant info.

I just don't want to get ripped off.

Thanks!

How different is a Festiva from an Aspire, cause I've seen '95 Aspires for $750 with 55k miles...maybe you should just pick up a new one 😉

lol..

It kinda depends on what's causing the rattle. If it's just a broken weld, they may only charge you 50 bucks to put it up on the hoist and weld it back up. If it's something to do with your catalytic converter, it could be more... missing muffler mounts, who knows...

Exhaust stuff is generally pretty cheap though.. at least compared to other things.

My dad got a whole exhaust system(well, manifold to muffler) put on his truck for 120$.. that included bending the pipes and everything. Just at a little local place...

Festiva's and Aspires are very similar. My Haynes' manual says Ford Festiva/Aspire and very little of it differentiates between the two.

Is it actually called a reverberator? I'm trying to remember what the guy called it.

Hmm.. Resonator perhaps?

I've never heard such terms used with exhaust systems....

if the car has both,a muffler,and a resonator;
have a the resonator removed, and replaced with a piece of pipe.

Yes, it has a muffler for sure. I got it replaced last year.

I guess I didn't understand him at first, I thought by rattle he meant something was loose and rattling...

That's what it sounds like. I'm going to call them today for an estimate. So I should tell them to replace the resonator (if that's the problem) with a piece of pipe? What will that do?

Make for a throatier exhaust note.

I have a couple places around here that will do an exhaust on a full size car, from the converter back, for about $150.00. The resonator would add another $40.00 or so. It should be lifetime warranted, just like the muffler. Are you replacing the original system just now? Might as well do it right. For a few bucks more, you can get top quality pipes installed. Depends how long you intend to keep the car I guess.

Yay! No more go-kart sound!

Edit: No, I just want the noise to stop. I'm not redoing anything unless I have to. I'll do what it takes to keep my car in good, working order.

I've hacked em off with a sazall and muffler clamped on new ones. Did that with mufflers a few times as well. Put a pair of Thrush mufflers on my dodge truck and just used muffler clamps to secure the new muffs..got to spend time crawling around under the vehicle but you'll save a few bucks...

No, I would do something stupid and end up killing myself. It's safer to get someone else to do it. 🙂

Have the resonator taken out and have all the piping from catback to muffler replaced with 2 inch piping.

+5 hp baby! 😀

That's a more than 10% increase. I don't see that happening.

It was the catalytic converter. The insides of it fell apart and got lodged in the resonator. I got a new catalytic converter, resonator, and I'm getting a new muffler later. Total for the whole thing, $130 + tax.

Is that a good deal?

YES, that was a fantastic deal 🙂

Cool. They're advertisers on our station, so I'm happy to give them my money. They even took me under the car and showed me what was what and explained to me why they needed to be replaced.
