YACT: removing door handle

dabuddha

Lifer
car specs: 1994 Honda Accord LX

I was trying to remove the front door trim panels so I could replace the front speakers. I was able to get the whole panel off except for the stupid door handle. All my manual says is to:

Use a small screwdriver to disconnect the release rod from the handle lever and remove the handle.

I tried everything and just couldn't figure it out. I'll take some pictures tonight of the door handle so you can clearly see what I'm talking about but I'm hoping someone else here has done it before on this particular car.

TIA 🙂

Could you show me where you are having trouble?

Inside Door Panel

I'll try to take a picture of it tonight. Let me see if I can coax my wife into taking the pics for me.

Use a door handle removal tool. This inexpensive tool can be fitted between the winder and the panel and used to push the spring clip free.
Here's something I read in that link that I might need.

The door handle, if its similar to my 4th gen accord, should slide forward after being unscrewed. Then you can move it enough to disconnect the release rod. By the sound of your description I believe this is the case.

It does slide forward and I'm able to remove it from the door panel. But I can't disconnect the metal rod from the door handle. I tried use a flat screwdriver but I wasn't sure where to apply the pressure since the "retaining" clip is made of plastic.

First, thanks for the answer. Second, you should be able to slide the plastic clip of the rod before separating the handle. The plastic clip should stay in the handle.

Wow, this thread ties in so perfectly with my post in a practical joke thread to disengage the handle so some poor victim is locked *in* his car 🙂

These door rods and the clips that hold them are tricky for anyone the first time. Unless a good picture is available a junkyard is a good stop to make and see how they work.

Hey I think I know exactly what you're talking about. I was afraid to try it but I'll give it a shot. I'll take a picture tonight (didn't want to ask my wife to unscrew it to take a picture in case she screws something up 😀 ) so you can see a clear pic of it

Ok, that plastic clip should rotate where the rod actually goes through the handle. So you should be able to unclip it from the rod and rotate it around. Then the rod should lift up from the handle. Let us know.

Oh, I thought you were talking about "shaving" your handles. I was about to pimpslap you for even considering such a modification on a 94 Accord. 😛
