You could score a brand new Impreza 2.5i for about your budget. The auto gets 23/28 mpg.

I have a 05 Legacy GT Limited which I wouldn't part with for hardly any other car. I even prefer it to my dad's E500 4matic. My mother is on her second Impreza 2.5i and couldn't be happier.
