I'll get new pics up when my wife lets me spend more than 5 min at a time on my computer at home...

Original Pic Sheet 1
Original Pic Sheet 2

I drove it home on Friday, and the steering is shot. 20 degrees of slop!
Tie rod ends, ball joints, steering pin.

It smells bad. There's obviously at least 2 seal leaks.
Drivers side door seal and rear hatch seal at least.

Runs pretty strong, but backfires a lot.
No air filter in the filter box :Q. Lots of disconnected wires and vacuum lines. Pinched muffler.

Minor dings and such. Rust in 2 spots. Spot behind the rear bumper (bottom right corner) is easily repaired. Spot under windshield is not so easily repaired. Since there is a small crack in the windshield, I'll be pulling it as soon as the rain stops and I'll do some cutting and see if I can patch in a piece from a junkyard bus.
Sheet metal repairs. Bondo.

Compression is between 95 and 105 lbs on all cylinders :)Q) which stunned me considering the mickey mouse crap on the carbs. I'll replace the shocks all around when I do the steering. I think they're OK now, but if I'm under there anyway.

The interior is shot. I knew this going in however. Saturday I ripped out the carpet and curtains to help with the moldy smell. The cushions and upholstery needs to be redone, and I still need to rip out the linoleum that was under the carpet as well as the sheet of plywood that was between the floorpan and the linoleum.

Wiring under the dash needs love too... Lots of disconnected wires and stuff that shouldn't be there. I figured on a complete rewire anyway just due to age. So no biggie there...

Interior design: I'm going for a gray/blue color upholstery on the seats. Black carpet, and blond wood (read: clearcoated bare wood) for the cabinets. Headliner is white vinyl and in great shape.

Overall, the work involved will actually be less than I had expected. The only downer is the sloppy steering which is preventing me from driving it regularly until it's fixed.

Man, you've got some work ahead of you :) I presume you'll put it back to great condition in side and mechanically...how much will that cost in time and money do you think?

Sweet. I prefer splittys, but definitely wouldn't complain about a highroof bay :)

This one is air-cooled right?

Those are some of the most amazing vehicles I've ever had the pleasure of owning/driving. I had an 85 with a MarkIII conversion. It's nice driving a Van with a built-in cooler and queen-sized bed. Just be sure to pick a fabric that is static-resistant. I used to get shocked all the time by the static cling. ;)

$$ should be minimal. Here's my just-pulled-some-numbers-outta-my-arse budget:

Steering & suspension: $150 (This could go up if the rack itself is the problem.)
Electrical: $50
Carbs/mechanical engine: $25
Interior-
  • Carpet: $50
  • Upholstery: $200
  • Cabinets and other wood: $200
Exterior-
  • Sheet metal and body work: $200
  • Glass: $135
  • Lenses and lights: $50

TOTAL: $1060

Looks like a lot of work, but fun? :)

Are you going to give it a spray-paint job? :)
