YACT: Question about tires...

I never rotated mine, so my front 2 are nearly bald and my back 2 are fine.

I'm going to Costco tonight to buy new tires... should I get 4 brand new ones, or just 2 new ones for the front? My coworker said having 2 new and 2 used tires on the same car will affect its performance/handling, but I don't want to spend any more than I have to.

Will the car's performance/handling be seriously affected if I only buy 2 new tires for the front?

EDIT: I would buy them from tirerack, except I REALLY need to replace them soon. The front two tires are so bald, there are literally no grooves for the "penny test". I feel unsafe every time I drive, and my coworker lent me her Costco card to use today... so I'll be going there. 2 or 4?

just order them from tire rack and get it mounted and balanced at costco.

it'll be cheaper.

you dont need to replace all of em. Just replace the 2 bald ones.

get all new, but please rotate them next time, not only does not rotating cause them to become bald, the wear is normally uneven.

Hmm, getting mixed messages. The thing is, I REALLY need to replace them soon... the front two are so bald, there's no groove for the "penny test". I feel unsafe every time I drive, and my coworker lent me her Costco card to use today.

I would replace them all. Though if you want to be cheap, you could do that. How much are they going to charge anyway? I can't see more than $250 for 4 tires and installation for some cheapo tires.

A more costly car accident could occur because of crappy tires (happened to me).

You can get out for less then 300 easy. Its Costco. You don't have to replace all 4. Its not a race car so replacing two is fine. Let the flaming begin:D *dons flame suit*

I just said replace them all because it's the safe thing to do based on the info. Saying the rear tires are "fine" is not really accurate enough. How much tread is left? 50%? 60%? 80%?

You don't seem like the racer type so if your front tires are bald, I'm guessing your rears have quite a bit of wear on them too. So it would be best to replace them all and rotate this set this time.

if it's a performance car, then get 4. if it's just a grocery-go-getter,
then 2 is fine as long as they are the same size, style, etc. probably would
be a good time to check the alignment too and start rotating them every
other oil change.

a lot of tires are rated for 60k to even 80k miles.

It all depends on the way you drive.

How mcuh treads are left in your grocery getter ;)

There should be normal wear on the tires, I definitely don't race or anything.

Right now, I'm leaning towards just getting 2. Hopefully it won't come out to more than $200 after alighment, etc.

funk that, you only need 2 tires. use discount tire direct... their prices are typically cheaper, and they do mounting for free, too, i think. if not, take it to one of those small ghetto messican tire places.. they mount for really cheap. if theyre just normal sized all season tires expect to pay about 90$ for both, and 10$ for mounting and balancing.

alignment is not necessary, but is advisable. its typically 60$ for a 4-wheel alignment but i recommend the firestone 130$ lifetime alignment. that way, everytime you whack a curb or just feel the car isnt driving right you can just take it in w/o shelling out another 60$

Just a note; cheap tires aren't bad. Before I bought wheels and went 17" I had my stock steelies riding on some Goodyear Regatta 2's that cost about $250 for 4 mounted and balanced. Damn tires lasted more the 60k and were more then adequate for a daily driver.

Now you've got me wondering, how does an online store do free mounting?

you guys telling her to buy 4 tires must have money spilling out of your asses or something.

2 tires is enough.
