YACT: Question about Buying a New Car

Dedpuhl

Lifer
I've been talking to a dealer and doing a little research on a car I want to purchase. He has given me a price.

Now, I've been using a couple sites (edmunds and carbuyingtips.com) to determine a counteroffer. On carbuyingtips.com, they give some scenarios on how to calculate a fair price (invoice - holdback + destination + ~5%).

My question is this: When I take the base invoice - holdback - rebate + destination + 5% profit for the dealer, should this counteroffer be the final sale price of the vehicle will I need to tack on TTL? I don't see this mentioned on carbuyingtips anywhere.

I don't know how much more I can squeeze. I'm already using an X-PIN and there's a 2K rebate. The X-PIN actually drops it down to the "fair price" I've calculated. I'm not sure how much more they are willing to budge...even if I finance through them.

Oh yeah, it's a 2007 Mariner I'm considering.

That will probably not work, if there are factory installed options. The base price of the vehicle never includes that. Did you add all the options your car will have to the base price?

Having been in the car business for most of the past 23 years, I can say that is one of the biggest mistakes a customer makes, when it comes to figuring cost. (not adding the price of the options). Then they wonder why they can't make the deal.

An alternative to what you are doing, might be for you to decide what a fair amount over dealer invoice is to you, and offer them that. Most reasonable dealers will show you the factory invoice. It is illegal for them to alter it, btw.

PS, X-Plan is a Ford / Mercury set cost, which is listed on the dealer invoice. It is not negotiable. The manufacturer prohibits the dealer from deviating from those, as you will find out.

Yep. My "base" price includes the options. Edmunds actually has a nice breakdown of what the invoice price of the add-ons will be.

hm. That sure does suck.

Not really. It protects the integrity of the program, and keeps it consistent for all the eligible Ford/Mercury partner customers.

If you go in and give them your pin#, you will get the X-Plan price, no more, no less. It is what it is.

That's understandable. I'll have to ask to see the factory invoice and try to work out a number from there w/out using the X-Plan. If I see I'm going nowhere fast, I'll go back to it.

What you are saying was going to be my next suggestion. If you say you are an X-Plan customer, and show them your print out, with your pin, they have to show you the invoice. If you do not like that, you might suggest we forget about the X-Plan, and ask to make an offer. The worst they can do is say no, then you're back to plan A.

The salesman I've been working with seems to be fairly honest about some things. He even mentioned they have a hard time selling Mariners b/c there are other compact SUV's that are much cheaper.
