at approx how many miles should the power steering fluid be replaced/refilled?

i only changed it once, in a 94 tbird i had....because it made a terrible sound when i turned.
i pulled into the parking lot of a nearby auto parts store to get some, and he had a bottle ready for me; it was so bad he could hear it inside :/
