I'm thinking of buying a new car soon, but not sure if I should choose practical, fun, or a semi-practical semi-fun luxury car. If I go Subaru I'd be going for the 5-speed, Acura I'm not sure about (maybe automatic so the family can drive it about too)

2007 Subaru Legacy 2.5i SE: Scored ridiculously high on NHTSA's crash tests, reasonable price (aiming for $20k OTD with 0% financing for 24 months). Not so great resale value.

2007 Subaru WRX: Pretty good crash scores as well, fast, fun, price is meh - I think I'm looking at $25k OTD with 0% financing for 24 months. Again, not so great resale value.

2007 Acura TSX: (non-navi): Excellent reliability, resale value, comes pretty loaded. I'd probably end up paying about $26.5k cash (Acura doesn't seem to have any finance incentives)

After recently going car shopping, I am thoroughly disappointed with the 07 Subaru lines. The ONLY difference between the 06 and 07 WRX is the addition of a 1/8" jack for hooking up an iPod / other player.

Plus the Subaru dealers I went to only had 36k / 3 year warranty, and the interiors of the cars were very crappy (compared the the 06 Passat I ended up choosing).

I voted for the Acura because I am not too big a fan of the Subarus anymore. Don't get me wrong, WRX was my dream car until I actually went and looked at one and drove it. Fun to drive, not much else.

My mistake - how about what car would ATOT buy if they were in my place? :)

In the 9 years I've been driving I've had 3 new cars and 1 used car. The used car had a few surprises, then there was maintainence, etc. I plan to keep the car till the wheels fall off and I tend to take care of my cars, so that's another reason I want to go new.

well the 3 cars are really quite different...

the legacy is a mid-size family sedan (the GT would be an entry lux midsize)
the wrx is a sports sedan
the TSX is an entry lux small mid-size.

personally i like cars that are upscale yet somewhat fun to drive. the legacy GT looks great, has decent interiors, is reasonably powerful, and it definitely has that euro-lux feel to it... sort of like a TL even.

Interesting. You based your judgement on the entire line based on your experience with a model based on their budget line? The WRX is an impreza with a better engine/drivetrain/suspension/etc. Thats what you're paying for, not a better interior. What car manufacturer revamps their car lines every year anyway that you expect such a huge change from 2006 to 2007.

EDIT: You'll be able to get a new legacy gt for the same price as that tsx, but you'll be paying for it mpg wise down the road.

TSX - nice, peppy, creature comforts, space
WRX - great car, sporty, tiny
Legacy - decent mix between the two, more utility

All depends on what you want IMHO.

Yeah, Yeah... THIS ATOT'er would recommend looking at a Ford Fusion or maybe even a VW Jetta as well. They're in the same size and price range.

I based it on a 25k+wrx vs. a 20k passat. both "budget" line cars.

A $20,000 Passat? You must be talking used. Even the base models start around $23K now.

Because they're young. Young people tend to like ricemobiles.

I think ATOTers heard enough bad stories about VW. Buying a VW is like rolling a dice. You either get a perfectly working car or you get one with all these electrical problems.
