I got a "new" (to me) vacuum advance dizzy for my bus to replace the mechanical 009 that's in there now. Because I haven't had a chance to work on it (been sick, family commitments, etc) it's been on my patio looking forlorn. Dremel tool was still out from some case work I did, so while outside smoking one day I decided I'd polish it up. While I was at it, I polished the vacuum canister, clips, and condenser too. :D

Everything polished silver looked good, but not spectacular. I clearcoated the dizzy body so it wouldn't turn blah-gray again, and then squirted some blue Metalcast paint on the vacuum can and condenser.

Yeah, it looks a little bit rice, but it's an old VW bus, so nobody can accuse me of rice. Sauerkraut maybe, but not rice. :p

BTW: The sock was for buffing it with rubbing compound after the Dremel work was done. :p

Nice. Why did you replace the .009?

Haven't yet. O-ring is frozen to the case... :|

But the 009 just sucks for pushing a bus around. It doesn't advance far enough at low RPMs to give me the torque I need. There's a NASTY flat spot at around 1800 rpm when under load that just ticks me off. My 1700 engine needs all the help it can get when pushing around 3500 lbs. ;)

I'll keep the 009 as a backup in case the vacuum one goes south on me. Plus Bosch has stopped making the 009. It won't be long before the 009 builds up a mystique (more than it already has) due to its NLA status. heh

Hey Duroc, replace the antiquated points with a Pertronix Ignitor, you'll thank me later.

The flat spot is a common problem with the oo9 distributor along with the fact that it will give you poor gas mileage because the lack of vacuum advance.

Agreed, though I'll be hanging on to my points as a backup. Heard too many stories about the Pertronix hall sensor disintegrating... ;)

I thought about getting the dual vacuum dizzy that my bus was supposed to have (advance and retard) but since my bus is no longer subject to smog, figured I'd just get the single vacuum.

I too carry a spare points plate all ready to go but I have yet to see a Pertronix fail in any of my Corvairs or Bus, matter of fact, I still have an original Perlux ignitor in my 1964 Corvair.
(Perlux was the name of the company before they became popular and changed their name to Pertronix)

Yeah, I posted about this. I ended up just as addicted to my patches as I was to my cigs. :|

Giving myself a few months off (and smoking) before I hit up a new doctor to give me some Welbutrin and try again.
