I think he oughta go with a Subaru engine if he's gonna do a swap.

This is a side note but that VW thread with the pwnage you linked to a couple days ago was sweet.

Did some old hippie used to own it? Or still does? ;)

Mine? Well...

In 1972 it was purchased in Germany via the Tourist program. Basically it was cheaper to fly to Europe, pick up your VW, tour Europe for 2 weeks to get the mileage up over 500 miles (or whatever the limit was) then ship it home than just to pay the taxes and tarriffs on one shipped here new.

Once it got here, the family that purchased it cruised the country. I found bits of postcards from pretty much every tourist area in the country. Some time during that period the pop top was removed and the high-top installed.

After it being nice and worn it was traded in. A series of people owned the thing until finally a druggie lived in it in Hollywood and got it impounded. A shop in Hollywood bought it from impound for $200 and sold it to me for $700. I found needles, pot seeds, etc, all in it. I had to strip the interior to get the scent of skanky dude out of it.

I'm definitely NOT a hippie. Surfer. Surfers aren't necessarily hippies. I sooo want to put a NRA sticker in the back. ;)

But for now, the "Great White Bus" sticker will have to suffice. :D

This one is too rusty and had too many previous owner holes drilled in the thing. So I just consider it my driver and I feel free to add more holes whenever I want. :D

but if you take out the underpowered, dog-slow vw engine you may hit something at more than 50 MPH, making that thing the most dangerous vehicle on the road! ;)

Unfortunately, you've got to pour a LOT of money into these to make them worth a lot. I suppose it's that way with any restoration, though. As of right now, it's too late of a model year to fetch the big bucks, only the pre-1967 split window models get the tall dollars. That could all change in twenty years though, who knows.

Bay window values are already starting to swing upwards. Probably driven by the lack of easily found splitties around to purchase. Since splitties are going for many thousands for rustbuckets, a decent bay is starting to be worth something finally.

I don't care about the value for this bay. like I said it's beat to heck and would cost way too much to properly restore. So I'm just doing the upholstery, keeping the engine running sweet, and driving it.

:D

Hell yeah. There's a guy who shows up at my local track in his 86 Vanagon camper bus with WRX motor conversion. Runs low 14's :D
