Car = 1986 Chrysler Lebaron Sedan
Problem = Steering Rack is loose to the point of being dangerous to drive
Delima = Pay almost as much as I paid for the car ($600) to get it fixed in a shop or repair it myself and risk seriously pissing off the apartment complex management.
The car runs fine otherwise and will probably last me at least another 6 mo. to a year.
And I have gotten in minor trouble in the past for replacing the power steering pump in the parking lot and was basicaly told 'don't do that again' (I am friends with the complex manager, so I got off easy that time).
So what do I do, run the risk of making people mad and possibly getting evicted or spend way too much money at a shop?

If all you have at your disposal is a parking lot, take it to the shop. I just did mine on an Olds Aurora, and having a friend with a car lift made all the difference. I probably would have spend 6-8 hours on it if I just had jack stands. Instead, it took me 3 hours with a lift. Plus, you are going to have to drain power steering fluid, and I'm sure they won't be happy if you make a mess.

you've already been warned once by your friend. don't take advantage of the friendship and disregard the warning, imo.

Have a shop do it. Steering is a PITA to work on without a good place to work.
