YACT: Paint

My garage is basically a carport but with garage doors. My neighbor decides it was a great idea to spray paint his patio chairs inside the garage while my car was inside. Now my car has a nice green tint to it on everything (hood, trunk, windows, sunroof, rims) except for the right side of the car.

Is there an easy way to remove residue spray paint off car paint? I tried a couple of car washes and it won't come off. The paint is rough feeling. My neighbor claims no responsibility for his actions, since he claims it's a community garage and he can do whatever he wants in it. Besides I know he is broke anyways since the power and gas company always comes to ask me when they will be home so they can collect their payments.

EDIT: I got a few estimates from a few mobile detailers. They want to charge $120 and up, depending how bad they feel it is. They will try some PrepAll and/or clay bar to clean it up, along with a wax after it's all cleaned up.

This would be something I would be willing to try to do myself, but I just have no time.

EDIT 2: Cleaned. $110 later. Angry dad, my neighbor will pay it.

I would suggest a very fine cutting compound and hand buffing it out. I don't know of a chemical that won't hurt your clearcoat (but i'm sure there is something out there.)

lol, what kind of excuse is that... umm, its not my fault because anyone can use this garage..

WTF does that have to do with anything?

people.... sheesh.

Time to add more chlorine to the gene pool.

I'd complain to the land lord. Man, what an ass. I suppose it could backfire and the landlord could say that parking is at your own risk.

It is a logical first step before vigilantism though. 😉

Do you rent or own? If you rent your lease may hold the answer, alot of places clearly state that the garage/driveway is for parking cars and not doing any type of work. I feel he is responsible for the damages. Take him to small claims court.

Also call tghe police. That is pretty much vandalism. I don?t care if its overspray or was directly spray painted, it still ends the same, paint on your car that will not come off.

I would call the police and then my insurance company. I don't see any way he is not responsible for that damage.

Insurance. Your neighbor is without question responsible through his negligence. Just because it is a community garage he thinks he can damage your property inside it? 😕 What a deadbeat idiot!

What you have btw is known as "overspray". It is unlikely that it will come off. Seems to me you just won a free paint job.

that is COMPLETELY 100% your asshat neighbor's fault.. what a dink for saying he is not at fault.... go after him for sure!!!!!!

Pick a good colour. What car do you have that's about to get a (super-gloss metallic with clearcoat finish all on this assbag's dime) painting? 😀

1.) This would likely fall under property damage and call your insurance and fille a police report.
2.) Contact your landlord.....most leases prohibit this type of work occuring on premises.
3.) Usually you can have the finish buffed out and the overspray will come off, but depends on the vehicle paint conditionand the type of paint overspray. (Had it happen on a couple of projects we've done)
4.) Kick his ass seabass.

Well I made a few calls and I found a detailer that will come out to my workplace and try to clean it up for $300. I called my landlord, he says I have to talk to their landlord since this is a privately owned condo complex. He is going to get me a copy of the HOA rules so I can review them and the number to the HOA leader.

I cannot claim insurance, as I carry liablity only (Chevy Malibu, is it really worth the extra $1,400 a year?). I hope the neighbors carry some insurance for such, as I don't have time or money to fix such problems. Oddly enough a year ago, my car was in an accident. The police said that I can make a report, but I have to go to the station to make it since the events were not witnessed (but the garage reeks of fumes and is coated in green paint).

Arg, time for lunch.

I was like WTF when I saw it. 99 Chevy Malibu, not a huge loss, but still I like this car since it is so boring it's cheap to insure.

Some people are capable of controlling their anger.

Well, aside from doing physical harm or painting his car a nice bright pink...have sex in his drivers seat and make sure you leave proof? I'd probably do something a little more...damaging, but hey, whatever you want 🙂

The clay bar will lift the overspray. Don't trip!
Definitely give it a try....you might want to call your insurance company before you do anything else to it first though. If you end up being unsuccessful with the claybar, be sure they get an idea of the extent of the damages before you try to improve matters.
