YACT: Once you tap into a can of Freon, can it be saved?

Shops gets Freon in a big propane tank like container with a valve on it, but for consumer market, they were sold in a small 12 oz cans with a flat seal on the top.

You attach a valve which holds onto the side of the can, then screw the valve in which pierces the can.

If you only needed to use five oz, can you store it with the valve attached with minimal loss?

A lot of the (134a) cans that are designed for the excess to be saved. Yes the valve assembly should be fine.

134a has a threaded nipple instead of flat surface that allows much secure attachment of valve.

Over the years I haven't been able to save a can of refrigerant once it's been tapped. Maybe to the end of the day, but over time it will leak out. If you have a can of R-12, see if a local shop would be willing to take you can in exchange for the 5 oz being added to your system.

Most of those will not last a week. The seal just doesn't have the quality. It is made to seal the can for a few hours, not a few years. Take the can to a shop, they can yank the rest out. If it is R-12, you may get a few bucks for it.

If I only use half of it to fill the system, then take the remaining into a shop with the valve still attached before it leaks out into the atmosphere, will they recover it for me for free?

I have a case (12) of R12 that came in the trunk of my '70 Chevelle when I bought it
