YACT: On and off humming noise when car is moving.

Car is a 96' Civic LX with 215 000km on it.

Theres a weird humming noise, that stops and starts at a regular interval. The faster I drive the faster it starts and stops. Like the tires arn't round, or something. I dunno how else to discribe it.

Its been doing this for a while now, but used to be hardly noticable. Recently its been getting louder.


Anyone know what this might be?

1) Could be some crud stuck on a tire?
2) Maybe it's the tire itself--something about the tread?
3) Could brake pad/caliper be rubbing on the rotor? (Rotor warped?)

Its not a viberating noise..


Did that with my summer tires as well, not unblanced tires.

Exhaust pipe heat shield could be loose causing a humming/buzzing noise when the engine is under load or idling.

Raise the car up, support it with jack stands, and check the heat shield on the exhaust for looseness. If you find any loose take large worm gear clamp, like a hose clamp, and put it around the shield. Tighten the clamp until the shield no longer is loose and test drive to verify the repair.

drive down a straight road, windows up, radio off, and listen to the noise: slightly turn the wheel left to right, causing a shift in the body, if the noise changes pitch, or goes away, it's a wheel bearing/ hub situation.

could be a bad exhaust gasket and you're hearing the exhaust valves open and close. The more you accelerate, the louder and faster it gets.
