YACT: OMG! While changing the oil on my brothers girlfriend's Prelude, I noticed...

That there was no air filter installed! :Q

Jesus H. Christ. I wish I would have noticed when they first bought it, they've put about 2,000 miles on it since they bought it.. and who knows how long the guy that had it before drove it like that! :Q The engine was a replacement that had about 35k on it. The guy drove it for 7k before they bought it.. so I guess it's safe to assume the worst, and that it was driven about 9,000 miles with no air filter! :| When we replaced it, the only thing in there was the top half of the filter.. couldn't figure out why the tube wouldn't go in.. lol.

Simply aweful. I told them to change the oil again ASAP, just to help clean the engine out. I bet the filter was clogged and bypassing..

I wonder if the previous owner decided to forgo the air filter in favor of performance? That would be retarded... what a fscktard. I don't see how it would be possible to "forget" to install an air filter, you'd have to do it on purpose.

There wasn't any discernable difference between filter and no filter noise from the engine compartment.. I just can't believe I overlooked it, it's not the first time we've been under the hood looking around...

Hopefully by replacing it now, we kept engine damage to a minimum.. although I'm sure it accelerated wear during the last 9,000 miles.

Look at it this way, at least it's been the wettest spring in many years (not sure where you are, but nationwide averages are up) and we just came out of winter, neither being the dustiest times of year. Probably be just fine, though of course not ideal by an freakin means.

Yeah, no doubt.

The tube from the air box to the throttle body or whatever wasn't even clampted down. I tried to kill the engine by plugging the airbox with my hand, and it didn't die... so I checked all the clamps.

It's been summertime here for quite a while, almost all of the 2k miles they've put on it have been in summer heat. The air box is filthy inside. :frown: Who knows how long it has been off before they bought it though.. It's probably safe to assume the duration of the 7k miles the previous owner put on the new engine, though.

It's not burning ANY oil, and it has no leaks. It didn't use any oil in the last 2,000 miles. The engine only has about 44k on it. It probably accelerated wear during the last few thousand miles.. I'm sure with a couple of oil changes, all will be well though... Oh well, if it dies at 220k instead of 250k..

Yeah, 3rd gen.

There are engine swaps that you can do.. but I guess they're pretty hard.

I actually hate trying to change the air filter on my truck that for about 10 seconds I actually considered foregoing one. I have a 97 dodge ram, and the entire housing must be removed to get to the air filter. The problem is, the housing is a PITA to get locked back on. The 3 times I have opened it up, it has taken me 20-30 minutes to get it back on properly.

The air filter on the Prelude is in a pretty weird place, there are a bunch of tubes and wires running over the top, so it's kinda a pain, took us about 20 minutes..

Not as much of a pain as the oil filter, though. Whatever engineer said, "let's stick the oil filter.. HERE!" needs to be fired.

I like changing the oil on my dad's '81 Chevy 3/4ton W/ built 350 better.

geez, whenever I clean out my air filter, I notice all the grains of sand in my airbox and I think, thank God that someone invented airfilters.

Well, +2 HP while the motor lasted I guess.

I can just imagine everything it's been sucking up. She has quite the lead foot too, drives it pretty hard.. ugh.

At least she had a semi decent oil filter installed before, a Champion labs one..

Well, like I said.. hopefully with a couple of oil changes.. most contamination will be out.. and if we're lucky, it just caused some accelerated wear and no major damage...

Well, we successfully drove about 600 miles this weekend.. down into the hot desert-like area of Southern Oregon.

I sure am glad I saw the air filter situation before we made the trip, it was very dusty down there.. her engine would've been eaten alive.

Go to Napa and get a can of Sea Foam. With the car running, pour about 1/3 of the bottle in to the intake manifold. Shut it down, let it sit for about 15 min. Then start her up, hit the gas, and enjoy the smoke show It'll help clean out the internals. With the 2nd third of the can, put in in the tank to clean out the fuel system, and put the final third in the crank case. do another oil change in 4-500 miles. It helps clean out any gunk inside too.

Heh, the smoke show is the best part tho!!!! Take :camera:'s!!

that is exactly why we ended up with a used '98 Camry. My wife and I have had mazdas for 16 years or so, but they always have the filter behind the engine. I open the hood on this camry, and I am staring right at the filter. first change, I run oil down the block, a real mess. Next time, I poke a hole in it with an awl, and go back in the house. Half hour later, not even one drop of oil comes off the filter flange.
The only thing behind the engine is the power steering pump, and the resevoir is remote mounted on the shock tower. I can change both the starter and alternator with a "6 crescent wrench if need be. Being a mechanic who does his own thing, this car sold itself, and later on, when working on the stereo, I discovered that the heater core came out like an oversized cassette tape!!
Remember the day when the heater core required a dash removal, and reminded you of a heart transplant? LOL!!!!

Hmm.. Never seen this Sea Foam stuff. I don't really like the idea of putting it into your crankcase though.. I'd probably cut it down to 50-100 miles, if I did it at all. The engine looks very clean inside, just looking in the oil fill hole.. so I don't think theres any major sludge buildup.

I'll probably get her some FI cleaner, and recommend that she change the oil/filter again in like 1500 more miles.. I'd bet the engine will be pretty clean of debris by then...
