YACT: Olds Aurora acting up again

Anyone ever change a water pump on a 95 - 99 model Aurora? I have a 95, and it is leaking fluid (now just water, since its warm enough) out of the pulley side of the water pump. It only happens when I shut the car off, so I can fill it every day before I take off, and its fine.

However, I need to know if its going to be possible for me to even get to it with my average mechanical skills, and my Craftsman Socket set. (108 piece? 1/4", 3/8"/ and 1/2" wratchets) I can get a few loaner tools from Autozone, if I need them. Also, can it be done in under 4-5 hours? I've changed the belt for the water pump in about 20 minutes.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

OK, I'll try and help you. I haven't worked on this type of car for a water pump, but I do know it uses the same engine as the Cadillac Northstar V8. I believe you need a special tool to remove the water pump from the engine once you have gained access, it doesn't unbolt like a conventional pump.

I would recommend going to a parts store or library and reviewing the procedure in a repair manual for more information.

I don't know about special tools needed, but the book time to remove and replace it is 1.1 hours and the GM part number is # 12487361. Of course, that time is after all necessary parts are removed to get access to the water pump.

It doesn't sound like a huge job, but like was said already above, it may require a special tool.
