YACT: OK, what is a Golf V5?!

I see lots of them around here and I'm wondering, a V5 engine? I know nothing about cars but aren't they suppose to be V-evennumber?

No your right, its a V5 engine...it's pretty much a VR6 with 5 cylinders. You can have V-oddnumber, but this particular engine makes it smart to have a VR5, since there is only a 15-degree angle between the "V", so its essentially like a inline 5 cyl engine (which are quite popular in cars as Volvo, Mercedes, and Acura).

When the heck did they come out with this??? I have kept up with the Golfs and haven't ever heard of this before. I know the new one is called the MK5 though because it is the 5th new platform.

No, it's not like the vr6

The TDi Golf and Jetta are still eluding me, thus I was more than happy to test-drive this top-of-the-line Jetta with the 'new' V5 engine. It's basically a V6 but with 2 and 3 V-formation opposing cylinder banks. The VR6 powerplant featured offset space-saving cylinder banks, but the V5 has gone back to the classic layout, albeit minus a cylinder.

Hey now....i pulled up their Engines page it is says no such "V5" is avail. I call BS.

It is not available in the US. There are also V5 Passats, I know that is real because I frequent the Passat forums and I've seen pictures.

Why in the WORLD would you "call BS" on something like this?

"I think today I will go on AT and make up a story about some poppycock-VW engine..."

Audi and Volvo have had inline 5 engines for a long time. If you ever hear of Volvo Penta engines in boats, that's an I5. rbloedow is also correct about the Acuras.

Here's some V5 pics.
