YACT: noisy overdrive gear

I have an 88 ranger, a manual 4 speed + overdrive, and the overdrive makes this kind of rattly noise. I'd almost call it grinding, but it doesn't sound THAT severe. If I have my windows open (50+ MPH), I can't even hear it. If I let off the gas, it stops the noise.

Any ideas?

I don't really know. :D

Everything concerning it refers to it as overdrive and not 5th gear, but it's where 5th gear would be on the shifter.

(1) (3) (OD)
. |---|----|
(2) (4) (R)

(but it's referred to as a 5 speed transmission  )

What do you mean by "electronic OD", electronically engaged? The original overdrive was an actual seperate set of gears independent of the main transmission, that further reduced the drive ratio. That is why, in some applications, you could have "overdrive" in more than one gear.

Then came the five speeds, and if 5th gear was in and of itself lower than a 1 to 1 ratio, it was called "overdrive".

I believe that's the case here. http://www.therangerstation.co...brary/TransRatios.html

The number three counter shaft output bearing is on the way out, to reduce the noise level, pour in one quart of Lucas manual transmission additive.

Twenty bucks says he's low on tranny fluid.

Huh. 3rd gear makes a little more noise than the other gears, but it's pretty minor compared to 5th.

Pour it in where? I thought only automatic transmissions had transmission fluid?

woah...all transmission i know of use some sorta transmission fluid, be it ATF or MTF/gear oil. The parts in the transmission need to be lubricated. And the number three counter shaft output bearing is not your "third" gear.

I'd reccomend checking out a forum with a focus on ford cars, especially your car's gen. You'll find much more help there

That's what I always thought, but this truck doesn't have a transmission dipstick, and the stuff in the manual concerning transmission fluid just says "automatic transmission fluid."

And the number three counter shaft output bearing is not your "third" gear.

I never said it was; just giving more information.

A lot of manual transmissions do not have a dip stick (in other words, i have never seen a MT with a dipstick). Instead they have a fill hole, which is often on the side of the transmission case, and usually you are to fill the transmission untill fluid reaches the fill hole. Some manual trannys do spec ATF as the lubricant of choice. Always take off the fill plug before the drain plug.

If you cannot get the fill plug off after you have taken off the drain plug, how are you gonna get that fluid back in there?

Cool, thanks for the info. So I figure I should:

- make sure it has enough transmission fluid
- if still making noises, change transmission fluid?
- if still making noises ... tranny needs work?

I stated that the number three counter shaft output bearing was on the way out, I said nothing about the third gear bearing or synchro.
