YACT: new engine

Well, what I was hoping to be a minor problem ended up being something extremely serious.

I took my car to AAA today because the engine has been clicking lately. To quote my statement: "Found rod bearing is worn out on #3 cylinder. Will need an engine to resolve"

🙁

New engine? Wahhn! I can't afford this. Anyone know if I can replace rod bearings? Is this something I can do myself or should I get a professional to do it (I am a car n00b, btw)? And about how much would it cost?

Poor Rav4

ummm you can get rod bearings w/o new engine... you can swap the whole thing out form the bottom.

Can I do this myself? Or should I have someone else do it?

😛 I suck at cars. So is this replaceable? Should I take it to a dealership?

I know nothing about cars, I'm sorry 😛

Unless it's a fluke and the rod bearing was defective, it is likely the rest of the engine is fairly worn out also.

BTW, get a second opinion. If they picked up on your n00bness, they could just be trying to take you for a ride.

Depends on what engine it is.

Assuming just #3 is the problem:

pull pan
remove rod cap
inspect rod bearing and bearing surfaces
inspect crank bearing sufaces
refinish as necessary
replace bearings with the required bearings and size
torque everything to specs
put back pan with new gasket
fill with oil

done.

If there is serious crank or rod bearing surface wear, you will have to pull the crank and/or rod from the engine and take it to a machine shop.

At this point, you must decide whether this engine and/or car is worth it.

If you do not know how to do it yourself, don't even attempt it as you might screw it up badly. (Like me).

before I got my car I know pretty much nothing, then I bought a GOOD manual and tore my engine out and rebuilt it all no problem. Its so simple if you have the tools and know what they do, just follow the manual. To replace the bearing you would have to drop the oil pan, rotate the crank to give you access to the #3 rod bearing and then take it out. measure the journal with a micometer and buy the proper replacement bearing. New bolts for the bearing cap and you are good to go.
