I'm 20 years old, and I went to a Dealership and test drove a new Cobalt. I am considering buying it, and I got an insurance quote from Geico. The quote of 3,000 for 6 months. Why is this quote so high? Is there anything I can do to get it around 3K for the whole year?

I'm already getting quotes from other insurance companies today. Any suggestions?

Also... Do you guys like the Cobalt? What vehicle do you recommend for about 13K new?

Edit: My driving record is perfect. I've never even gotten a parking ticket.

All state quote: $2540/6 Mo

Found a 2002 Chevy prizm for 8k and it only saved my 300! Geico quoted me at 2200.

I'm just going to have to wait and pay cash for a car. I currently have 2K so it should only take me a few months.

He's in NJ. I think they are among the highest rates in the country. Wasn't there a big flap about this not too long ago?

shop around. If you are lazy, you can get quotes from Progressive and AllState online.

Geico sucks. Call up progressive or allstate or some other places.

Also, if rates still suck cause of your age and location, buy a 97 sentra.

Dude, that sucks.....out loud!!

I grew up in upstate NY, with no fault insurance, and bought a camaro when I was 23, and my insurance (full coverage, naturally, with 250 deductible for collision, 100 deductible for comprehensive, 100% glass coverage and uninsured motorist) for the first YEAR was $1200. Second year, I was 24, it dropped down to $1130 (gee, thanks!).

Third year, 25 years old, dropped down to $700. Go figure. I didn't drive any differently, or any faster (or any slower!! ). Now I'm in my 40's, driving a truck with full coverage, $500 deductibles, with towing and rental car coverage, plus uninsured driver coverage, and pay ~$550 a year, in Texas.

Geico sucks, go find someone else. When I first got here, I contacted them about insurance, and they wanted TWICE what Farmers quoted me! Uh, what about saving up to 15%?? :disgust:

You can't get quoted under your family? (Shared insurance)

B4 I bought my new Accord Progressive wanted $2000 every 6 months on a new car. I'm paying $788 a year under the family.

Is the insurance on used cars cheaper?

I really cant move out of NJ. Free rent... Good Job... And I'm in school.

i work for an insurance co and for some reason, the colbalt is very pricy, especially for a young driver. just like a ford focus is very expensive. it has to do with crash ratings and the more compact a car may be makes the prices higher

Insurance differences are insane. I'm paying I think $670 a year for full insurance with a $250 deductible and all the options. If I lived in NJ that would probably be more like $2000 a year!

$5000 a year is insane. That's probably more than your car payments would be.

raise your deductible, go take a defensive driving course, etc to reduce your payment.
whatever you do, don't drive without insurance :)

GEICO is the most expensive insurer IMO, never use them. The quotes I've received from them have always been at least twice as much as the next highest insurer. Never ever never ever ever never never ever ever never never never never ever never use GEICO.

My driving record is perfect.

is this your first vehicle by yourself? if so, then that is why it's so high. after 1 or 2 yrs of good driving, no tickets, no points and good payment record your rates will come down.
