YACT: Need Tires

Where is a good place to go for new tires with out getting ripped off?

How is Costco?

Edit:
I was just quoted $600 for 4, 50k miles, tires installed at Big O Tires.
I drive a Blazer SUV.
What is on there right now are: P235/ 70 R 15

i use sams...good stuff especially being i have a full size truck and tires cost me quite a bit

Tirerack is the best in terms of price but sometimes Costco turns out to be better as it includes mounting/balancing etc. So compare the final price
Tirerack: Price of tire + shipping + mounting/balancing
Costco: Price of tire

I have a Costco card, but not a sams.

Well what kind of tires? Makes ALL the difference in the world.

I can get a car for $10k. Could be a Pinto, could be a Cadillac.

TIRERACK

will give you 35 selectionsin your size. Cheapest tire is $47 and about $7/shipping per tire.

Mount & Balance should be about $60 for 4.

$276 for 4 Mounted & Balanced

Being a long time user of tirerack. You guys forget costco/bj/sams offers life time balance & rotation. Most local shop charges 8/ tire if you go to them

You can save now buying from tirerack but each 7k you rotate & balance will cost you 30-35 bucks.

50k/7k = 7 rotation +balance @ 30 - 210.00 unless the place you drop ship from tirerack gives you life rotation + balance.

So it turns out you dont really save that much from tirerack.

The only thing its good for is hard to find tires.

Damn, I wish I could buy one tire for what your paying for 4 🙂

245/40x19 rear, 225/40x19 fronts...

and my rears are nearly gone at 17k

next set I am looking for is going to be mileage focused

Well, there are those of us who rotate our own tires and why would you need your tires re-balnaced every 7K miles?

FYI Wal-Mart used to sell lifetime wheel balance for $50, they may still do.

Brand & Model perhaps?

I guess in sunny CA, theres never pot holes like the one that swallows your car. I never said I did not rotate my own tires, I got an impact wrench and a set of impact sockets. but some people are not as fortunated or technical as us where you can just jack the car up and rotate the tire yourself. Some people do not even have tools to rotate their own tires. You balance your tires because it degrades the ride quality, it shortens the life of the tires, bearings & other parts due to vibration.

Most places offer rebalance at 5k, I extended to 7k

The definition of balance is the uniform distribution of mass about an axis of rotation, where the center of gravity is in the same location as the center of rotation. In English, that would translate to...A balanced tire is when the mass of the tire, when mounted on its wheel and the car's axle, is uniformly distributed around the axle. Even easier yet, how about...there are no heavy spots.

Balanced tires can be the difference between a good or bad driving experience. Some cars (and drivers) are more sensitive to an out of balance tire than others, but no one is happy with a vibration.

An out of balance tire can adversely affect ride quality, shorten the life of your tires, bearings, shocks and other suspension components. If you have a vibration that is dependent on speed, and usually becomes noticeable around 40-45 mph and increases as your speed increases, it's probably balance related.

Discount Tire is the cheapeast I found. I just bought some 2 days ago. (Tires.com) I searched/went to 6 different B&M stores. Went to tires.com, found the right size, good price, only $11 to install/lifetime balance/free rotation/etc.

Do Not, under any circumstances, buy Big O BRAND tires!
Their tires are of inferior quality, wear out SUPER fast, and are highly overpriced.

Big O exist only for those who are forced to finance their tires.

I speak from experience, I bought one set of tires from Big O when I couldn't afford to pay cash, seems as though I got around 20K miles out of them.

I haven't bought any since, however, I buy one or two used cars and trucks every year (mostly for re-selling), and have several that had Big O brand tires on them.
One that I kept, I left the tires on it, all 4 tires failed at one point or another, and when one finally wore enough, I replaced all 4.

That said, Pep Boys have some good tires cheap, just be sure to research what you want. (Google!)

Costco ftw. You can get a set installed with lifetime rotation, balancing and puncture warranty for under $400 (they don't sell cheap tire brands though, only Michelin and BF Goodrich)

They also have $60 off coupons occassionally.

costco is good
walmart is ok

i just tried tirerack for my saturn, the size it takes isn't common at costco/walmart

i was very pleased. i used a "preferred" installer from the tirerack site and the whole experience was excellent

That seems high, but without knowing what kind of tires you are looking at it is hard to really judge. Are you looking at all terrain tires, street tires, off brand, name brand, etc? I put a set of 285/75R16 off-brand all terrain tires on my truck for ~$475.
