YACT: Need some help with Speedometer

So I drive a 99 taurus. On the highway yesterday, my speedometer randomly stopped working, the needle went to 0 and stayed there. Thankfully I can gauge speed from the tac which was still working. The only odd thing was the transmission(auto) started shifting really hard and the check engine light came on. After about an hour the speedometer started working and 20 minutes after that the shifts became smooth again. Today the check engine light went off like 5 minutes into driving. Any ideas on what this is?

VSS- Vehicle Speed Sensor

or

some vehicles have a sensor at the output of the transmission.

sensor is guarenteed to be somewhere it'll be a bitch to get at.
