YACT:need snow tires

Well...I've become a snowboard, so I need tires to get me up Mt. Baker.

I called costco, and they can install Michelin X-Ice tires for $86 a tire...

do I need a full set? My car is a '94 saturn sw2...front wheel drive..

I don't really know anything about snow tires...

is this a good deal?

My current tires aren't very good...was thinking of replacing them anyways...

advice???

Thanks

You cannot use snow tires all year long or you will wear them out in a very short time. They are very soft compound tires and using them in the summer will wear them out insanely quickly.

You can get by with just fronts, but I don't recommend it because you'll want to prevent having the rear swing around too.

If you just need to get up the pass every few weeks, you're really better off with a set of chains that you can put on and take off easily.

I'm planning on going up twice a week btw...
Well, if you're getting snow tires for the winter, the best thing to do is just get a set of cheap steel wheels so you don't have to mount and dismount the snow tires every time the season changes and can just swap the whole wheel.

I'm concerned about snow traction here in northern Ohio. Got my wife a set of BF Goodrich Traction T/As, and my son a set of Yokahoma Avid Touring. Each has good ratings for wet and snow traction. Price was great, too. Either one had much better ratings than any of the Michelins. Try Tire Rack for a good set of all seasons.

I have the Goodyear Tripletreads, and we have had a little slippery stuff in western NY. Very good so far, although nothing deep yet. They do seem to help on ice as advertised though.

saturns DO NOT use Chains. You got to get Spider Spikes.. which if i remember right costs about 400 bucks for a set.

My dad has them for his saturn. Apparently that's the only thing approved for use with saturns.

i'd never buy a car with that little clearance between the tire and body parts, it's just asking for trouble if you pick a chunk of mud or something. of course, i'd never buy a car made by a company whose car's wheels fall off, either. so there you go.
