Working on my k- car (1987 dodge aries 2.2l) doing a brake job, which unfotunately is calipers rotors and pads. Also need to replace two wheel studs, having trouble figuring out just how to do that. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks guys

See if I'm right, but I think you'll just punch the broken studs through the back. Buy the new studs to see what that upper knurled section looks like.

If I remember right.
If it's the studs on the front axles, then the spindle has to be removed, the bearing removed, the new stud's pressed in, then a new front bearing.
On the rear the drums have to come off , then the studs replaced.

yeah that sounds right to me
was like that for my LeBaron (similar car)

Ornery hit the nail on the head, the wheel studs have two distinct diameters, one is the diameter of the thread, the other os a knurled diameter, to remove the broken stud first rotate the hub assembly to a point where the stud will not interfere with any brake parts when removed, then whack the stud with a hammer, if the stud has broken off flush with the surface of the hub, use a punch.

To install the new stud, insert it through the back of the hub and draw it tight by using a lug nut that is screwed on backwards.

(The taper must face away from the hub)

feeling stupid, ran off to get parts and forgot about the thread. I got the studs in the hub plate. New problem

The hub wont go back on. I can only get it in there part of the way, its really upsetting me because it really should just slide in without too much trouble, any tips?

Thanks for the responses

Were your studs mounted in the rotor? If so, did the rear bearing fall out when you were beating it? Is the bearing installed backward, or not seated correctly now?

studs are not mounted on the rotor, there is a small stud plate/hub that plugs into the cv joint. As best i can tell the bearing/seal are in there correctly, I can get it about hub assembly about half of the way in and thats it. We have decided and been told that its not a good idea to try and beat it in there. Im really mega poor and dont want to have to take this to a shop just so they can slide it in there. Besides that I will end having to remove the entire knuckle to have that done as the car is not towable right now.

OK, by "hub assembly", you mean the rotor, eh? I know zip about the FWD, but it's gotta be able to go on somehow. How tight was it when you pulled it off? You could sand the hole and the hub. Use some lube on it. "Coax" it with a rubber mallet. I'm surprised you could get it off, if it was that tight.

How deep is that hub? Quarter inch? Half inch? One inch? If it's only a fraction of an inch, the lug nuts could draw it down. God knows how you'll get it off again, though.

You do realize that whatever brakes you buy will most likely cost twice as much as your car is worth. I say ditch the K-car and step up to the luxury and class only a dodge horizon can offer. Your talkin about $300 either way you go, so hey...it's a deal! :D

pads - 14
rotor - 19
caliper - 19 i think

The hub(s) are pressed into the bearings on this vehicle, you are not supposed to remove them unless you plan on bearing replacement, consider your wheel bearings toast.

The entire assembly must now be brought to a machine shop with a set of new bearings and seals, the shop will use a 30 ton hydraulic press to remove and install the new bearings onto the hub.

Hey Roger, are you sure he removed the hub from the axle at all? I thought he was just trying to put the rotor back onto that hub, no?

His own words Ornery ;

The hub wont go back on. I can only get it in there part of the way, its really upsetting me because it really should just slide in without too much trouble, any tips?

Yup sounds like he borked it. Just bashing the studs out with a hammer is the best way to go on these. Somewhat stress releaving.

Fwiw to the K car bashers: You know practically all of dodges 84-93 fwd cars were based on the K car chassis, including some pretty good performers like the Daytona. Its a simple, dependable, and pretty sturdy design.
