i'm graduating next month and will be a doc.. hence image car, though I don't need such a hotshot image car. I would probably hold off lexus/acura for another 4-5 years and for now, settle on the following choices:

camry hybrid with navigation/leather: $30K but good gas mileage and ~$2K tax credit as well.
solara SLE 4cyl with navigation/leather: $25K
accord EX 4cyl with navigation/leather: $25K
mazda cx-7 with nav/leather ~ $29K .. no reviews as it is just released
civic hybrid with nav $23K + tax credit, but somewhat slower than a regular 4 cyl, small, boring, no leather, nothing fancy.

lexus/acura/etc - pre-owned can be had for <$30K but bad mileage, premium gas, premium insurance, and expensive maintenance is not worth it, not at least until i make serious money.

VW jetta or passat TDI .. i'm seriously entertaining this idea but hasn't VW gone down the drain? I don't know how bad their reliability is now and i've heard jetta is nothing but a corolla with some faux chrome grille and more options. i have no idea how diesel prices are going to be but if TDIs really get mileage comparable to hybrids, it might be worth looking at if diesel prices stay at or below unleaded prices. of course, diesel can tend to be more expensive than premium at times..

no american brands.. not worth it. from personal experience, don't feel like they are reliable enough.

based on these preferences, can anyone suggest other ideas? thanks!

cliffs:

i basically have four options:

1) new hybrid, expensive but with long term savings
2) new 4 cyl car, cheaper but with normal savings
3) used expensive car.. possiblity cheaper but long-term expenses
4) new/used vw TDI - cheap/expensive but with possible long term savings (based on diesel prices)

Why do you need an image car if you're a doctor? Only businessmen and real estate agents need image cars. What are they going to do, fire you? "Oh no, my doctor drives what he likes instead of a cliche, I'm going to walk my broken leg to another hospital!"

Oh, and for the record...if you care about mileage...you're not looking for an image car. Except maybe the Prius.

Why is gas mileage such a big deal? Is the $600/yr between a car that averages 30mpg and 20mpg really that big?

For a doctor, image....you need BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Acura, Jaguar, or at the very least Volvo or Saab. You can get away with environmentalist doctor in a Prius or (maybe) a hybrid civic, but buying basic Toyotas, Hondas or Mazdas won't get you far.
Save some $$$ on the navi and get a used Lexus.

used lexus = premium maintenance, premium insurance, premium gas. and used ES (2003) are still running in the $25K and over range..

assuming a 15 mpg difference and 12K miles/year at $3/gallon it does make a difference ($2400/year.. and for 5 years, that can be >$10K savings) plus there is the tax credit with the hybrid.

image, perhaps, but not really "doctor image".

Good idea, though, I love the Mini.

It's "right out of med school" image.

if my doc/ surgeon is driving a pontiac or most other gm pos .. well he wont be our doc/ surgeon .. ditto for lawyer ... hair stylist ... RE agent ... we have rejected job applicants in our design firm if they say they like pontiac (just an example) ... its a good indicator to judge someone's design sensibilities ... which in turn is a very good indicator of other things ... (just as this post conveys a lot about me :D

V6 Mustang convertible? Fun, decent mileage, runs on regular, should be reliable, repairs, if there are any, are cheap.
