YACT: Need advice on ghetto improvised maintenance on a 2004 Suburban

I have a 2004 GMC Suburban 1500 withabout 10k on it. I have no access to mechanics or spares at the moment and need to do whatever I can to keep it running.

It stalls out every 3rd time or so when you put it in reverse. Any suggestions on that?

All I have access to is 50 weight motor oil for diesel engines. Will that hurt it? It gets down to about 30 at night here.

Any other suggestions on maintenance I can do without a source of parts would be helpful. I have already been blowing out the air filter we have now with a compressor.

 
theres something wrong with it. your gunna need a mechanic to fix that, it could be MANY things. dont put diesel engine 50w motor oil in it though.

It's under factory waranty. Don't touch it! Let somebody else fix it. OMGWTF.

On edit: GMC does not make a 2004 Suburban. It's now called a Yukon XL. Do you know what you own? Is it a Chevy Suburban?
 
There is nothing you can do. It needs to go to a dealer. Probably is NOT the transmission, just a stalling problem. DO NOT use 50 weight oil.
Not because of your temperature, but because it's completely the wrong type of oil for your engine.

 
umm yeah..I should have pointed out that I am in Iraq and thier are no dealers. I am pretty sure it is a GMC Suburban 1500, I would have to go back and read the badges on it again.
 
Hmmmm... Iraq. This thorws sand in our vaseline.

Do not put 50 weight engine oil in. You are better off with old bad oil of the correct viscosity than the wrong oil. Other than that, good luck. Does it have OnStar? Maybe they could give you a diagnostic.

I don't think onstar works overseas😉
 
OK, I got it. "Borrow" a C-130 transport plane and fly the Suburban over US air space. Then you can activate OnStar and get a diagnostic code.

Since I am of absolutley no help, consider this a bump.

Has the MIL (check engine light) come on in the past or when the stalling occurred ?

Your vehicle is OBD II compliant, therefor a trouble code has probably been stored (either soft or hard codes), thus to properly diagnose your problem, you are going to have to either find a GM service department or go out and buy (and learn to use) a OBD II scanner.

Call the military or call your employer. Who are you working for in Iraq, I'm sure they have resources

Hell do you have AAA, see if they will tow it for you to a mechanic. ;-)

sounds like he has an american vehicle that was shipped over to Iraq and is now having problems. with no dealers around, he has to figure it out
