Hammer a screwdriver through it, then twist off.

Yes, it will be messy.

I don't have a hammer either. that thing didn't come with my toolbox.

Use a wrench as a hammer. Or a phone book. Or even your hand. The casings on oil filters aren't very tough.

And I can't believe you didn't get an oil filter wrench when you bought the filter. heh. But good for you trying to do things yourself!

Another option is to get a leather belt, wrap it around a couple times, get it to grip the filter and twist.

Put the oil plug back in and fill it up with the new oil. Drive your car to a care care center and have them change the oil for you this time. Then, you can take a trip to Wally-World and buy the needed accesories to change it yourself the next time.

However, let me suggest a few rules that I have lived by:

1) Ensure that you have the proper tools before starting a task.
2) Place all bolts/nuts into a magnetic dish so you don't lose them.

I am all set! went to walmart to grab an oil filter wrench, gonna return that next time when i go to walmart. 😀

Um, why not just keep it, so you won't have this problem next time?

People like you are maybe one of the reasons Wal Mart's return policy kept getting worse and worse and is crap now. Starting in June our store won't allow any returns without a receipt, even for a $2 item. Not even for store credit anymore. Even with a receipt, I got a hassle about trying to exhange something because I had bought it the week before on sale and the price was now higher (I told them I just wanted to exhange it).

Some of the more expensive filters have a grip at the end so that you don't need a wrench.

Doesn't help though if the guy before you used a wrench to tighten it.

Actually those are the Fram filters, probably the worst on the market.

Advance auto sells their own filter with the grip stuff on it; they are relabled purolator filters, which are better than fram imo.

Just use something to get a better grip on it... That rubber they sell to put under stuff so it doesn't slip works good... an old choarse rag... etc etc you shouldn't need the special tool to get it off they aren't that tightly screwed on to begin with. Most new one have nonskid stuff on the top of them to begin with...

Don't hammer a screwdriver through it, don't try to pry it open with your hands... just go buy an oil filter wrench for under $10 and do it the proper way. The last thing you'd want to happen is to strip the thread on the block, or warp the connector, or crack it.

And don't forget to put some oil on the rubber ring before you HAND tighten it.
