YACT: My stereo - RIP - **UPDATE called Best Buy

So, 2 nights ago I insert a CD into my car CD player and in starts making a buzzing noise as though it were trying to eject the CD and the noise wouldn't stop, not even when I turned off the car. So I was like, alright, I'll just rip this thing out. Well, it is factory install and after a google search I found that you need DIN tools t remove them. So I drive out to Walmart, the only place I could find open that had these DIN tools. So I stick them in, one side catches, the other does not. So, stereo will not come out, I tried for an hour. Then I start hacking away at the face plate with a screw driver, I was very irritated by this point, face plate comes off, but still can't get at the CD to make the noise stop. So I put the DIN tools back in and all of a sudden the noise stops. When I turn on the car, the power of the stereo does not come on. So, I need a new stereo.

READ FROM HERE ON IF YOU HAVE A SHORT ATTENTION SPAN ->

I go to Best Buy last night because they are advertising free installation, and they say that in addition to the price of the CD player I will need to pay an additional $70 for installation kit, harness, and crossover. I had already purchased an installation kit online, but they still want $50 for harness and crossover. Does this sound right? Is any of this already in my car? Is Best Buy trying to rip me off? By the way, I have a 2001 Mazda Protege and I will be purchasing this CD player JVC CD Player

Thanks Guys, any help would be great

UPDATE**************

So, I just called Best Buy to see if they would quote me the same thing over the phone. The woman I talked to also said that I need a crossover. I asked her why I would need this. She claims that since my factory installed stereo only outputs 30W per channel, and my new CD player will output 50W per channel, I need this crossover, otherwise I run the risk of blowing out my speakers. Does this make sense? Would this only occur if I turned the volume all the way up?
thanks

Crossover? Yeah, right:roll: The parts they'll need, if purchased at retail prices, would be no more then about ~$35. I'd tell them to kiss my......

what kinda car do you have ?

if you have the installation kit, all you really need is the specific adapter for the headunit to your make and model of the car.

plug in the antenna and you should be good to go.

 as in that's total BS. You don't need a crossover. Ask the guy why you need one. I'd be interested to hear his response.

you can get the wiring harness and installation kit at Wal-Mart for < $25. That's all you'll need.

You don't need a crossover.

Just went to bestbuy.com, I no longer see the ad for free installation. WTF, it was just there yesterday and said it was valid through 9/18/04, can anyone find the details of this offer? AHHHHHHHHH

Like the others said, all you need is the installation kit (the plastic housing that holds the stereo) and the wire harness. Crossover......its either built into the stereo as a feature or if you add an external amp you'll have one....or having component speakers..etc. Do the work yourself and save the installation money.

If you're willing to spend another $60 I'd highly recommend this. It'll simply blow away anything and everything else that's remotely in its price range.

thanks for the suggestion NutBucket, but it isn't really in my price range. I just need something that is going to work.

The problem with doing it myself is that I was never able to actually remove my old stereo. I have tried to rip it out, but it is stuck on one side. I was hoping that an installation place would be able to get it out.

anything special I should do to get it out? The DIN tool just won't catch on the left side. It just slips in an out.
