So it's a 2006 Forester, 18k miles, $18,995 was the price. It runs real nice, but she told me that it had been a rental earlier and immediately my jaw dropped. The blue book on a car with a similar configuration in excellent condition, is $22k. But the fact that it was a rental... I dunno. I'm a bit worried, hahaha. But it looks and drives very nice.

There are two kinds of car that will go anywhere, a four wheel drive and a rental.

Never ever ever buy a rental.
My current car was a rental. It was a great deal and it's been a fantastic car. Nothing wrong with it whatsoever. I don't put a lot of mileage on my cars so my mileage has already equaled out and right now I could sell it for at least $1500 profit.

I think it all depends. Most people I know really abuse rentals.

Normally I would never recommend somebody buying a rental either. But going into it I knew what it was and it looked fantastic with hardly any wear on the inside (especially on the drivers side). Of course I knew it could be a different matter concerning engine/transmission so I had it looked over by a friend of mine.

I also knew going in that I don't put a whole lot of mileage on my cars and that I would be good to go in a couple of years as far as the value went. After a year-and-a-half I feel I made a great choice and couldn't be happier with Smokey. :D

People really abuse their rentals that bad? I had a rental for 3 weeks earlier this year and never abused it. :/

I guess some people do. I've heard some pretty messed up stories about what people have done in rental cars. The scary thing too is that if its a new vehicle the problems might not hit you until later, so you dont even know the extent of the damage done on the engine, transmission, etc.

I guess suburu's only come with a 3 yr factory warranty, so she got a 6 year extended warranty for it too, for $1000 extra.

I used to take rentals off-road, do neutral-drop burn outs, donuts on dry pavement & one time even got a Taurus sedan airborne out in the Arizona desert. (amazingly it survived with no ... erm ... well at least no VISABLE damage!))

Although I'm (somwhat) more responsible now that I've grown up, for obvious reasons I will never purchase a former rental! :p

My girlfriend came home with a rental car 5 years ago. It was a VW nonetheless (UGH!). Its had the typical VW problems (little electrical things here and there) but nothing major.

My uncle bought a rental Corolla almost a decade ago.

Nothing but oil changes and new tires since then.

YAACEI! (yet another arm chair edmunds idiot)

Is she happy with her car?
Did it fit her budget?
It's not salvaged, right?

A good deal is a perception. Always remember that. Your satisfaction with the deal is all that matters.

If she's happy about it, why crash her party? People sometimes medel where they shouldn't.

To people who like to get all up in other people's business, should always remember this:
Unless you are making the down payment
Making the payments
or have agreed to make repairs on said vehicle,
then, how does someone else's transaction effect you?

BUTT OUT!

I bought a NEW 2006 Forester 2.5X with most options and paid a total of $20,000 INCLUDING 8.375% in taxes (Subaru had a $2000 instant rebate at the time).

So, with that, I would say she didn't get a good deal at all and invoice price for a new Subaru Forester 2.5X is under 21K to begin with.

Yeah, CarsDirect is showing $19,440+tax for a new stripped-down 2007 model, so unless it's absolutely loaded (and rentals rarely are), it seems like it may be a bit overpriced. As for abusing rentals, that's why most rental agencies won't rent to people under 25. It's shameful that people don't treat other people's property with some amount of respect. I've known several people who have had former rentals for long periods of time with no problems.

I've always been under the impression that rentals are (usually) taken care of by the renter, to avoid any damage charges. I am sure there are the exceptions, though.

Off-lease vehicles, however, are a different story. I know a lot of lessees will drive the wheels off of them and never change oil & fluids. So long as they look good when they are returned.
