YACT: My Dad's driving habits...

My dad has a 1989 honda accord LX-i (automatic transmission)

it runs perfect and even looks new since he got it detailed...

my question is: will his constant shifting back and forth between drive and neutral when he's stopped at a red light and then wants to go have a major impact on the transmission?

he's had the car for almost 2 years now, and it was previously owned by my aunt...there's only 110k miles on it (just breaking in for a honda) and she never did this to the transmission...she took excellent care of the car and so does my dad (aside from this little pet peeve of mine)

Leaving it in Drive while stopped is akin to lifting your foot off the clutch to biting point in a manual.

It probably won't matter one way or the other.

Confused

i wasn't sure if this would put a strain on the transmission, since after all, an automatic transmission is designed to be left in drive

Doing that WILL put strain on an automatic transmission - it's not good for it. Tell him to just leave it in drive at stops or get a manual transmission car.

I learn something each day 🙂

Hey I have the same exact car in a tan color sitting in my driveway right now, waiting to be donated to a charity. The thing has 173k miles on it now and it's still running perfectly as far as engine/transmission goes... dad got a new car and just doesn't need this one anymore.

my dad is into old japanese ricers that have 100k + miles on them...that way he saves on costs like insurance and property taxes which are high where we live...

Thats the oddest thing i have ever heard, i used to do that with my accord, but it was a manual trans. But doing that in a automatic, did your dad ever drive a manual trans car before.

yeah he knows how to drive both...but in his ever increasing old age, he opts to go with the automatic, as he finds himself in stop and go traffic pretty regularly
