Pulled into work today, hit the gas to get around someone and after making the next turn discovered that I no longer have a gas pedal. The pedal is lying flat on the floor. I didnt have much of a chance to look at it as I had to get inside and log in. Any suggestions on what all needs to be done?

It's probably just held on by a screw or two.

Edit: Or do you mean the pedal fell flat to the floor and you have no throttle control anymore?

Maybe broke the throttle cable?

That's my guess. I know the clutch cable is a common failure.

IIRC, Brutuskend used to work on these, or someone else did. It was mentioned in a thread where someone couldn't start their car and found out by turning the wheel they could, was that you?

Aircooled, Roger, or Zemmervolt would know the answer.

I thinking it is the throttle cable. IIRC the pedal is hinged at the floor and a spring on the cable keeps the pedal off the floor.

yea i talked my manager into letting me go look at it for a minute, it looks like the throttle cable disconnected from the pedal itself. There is a silver s hook that I have tried reattatching but it falls back out every time. Would it be worth it to try and bend the hook so that it stays in or will I need to replace the entire cable? Got some folks on a vw forum helping too. Doesnt look as bad as I originally thought

It shouldn't be a big deal.

Obviously, you're going to have to bend it over so it hooks until you can figure out a real fix.

In all honesty, that will probably fix it for quite a while.

Reminds me of a guy I went to high school with who had a VW Beetle. His clutch froze to the floorboard!

Thanks. :)

Conjur, in that case your friend's clutch cable probably broke.

Turin, the throttle cable should run right out from the side of the tunnel and connect to a hook on the side of the roller-ball under the pedal. As long as the cable itself isn't broken (you could test this by starting the car and just pulling on the cable itself to see if the engine revs up), you should be able to just re-attach it anyway you can.
While not the most reliable car ever made, old aircooled VW's are definitely the simplest to fix.

it connects to a hook? I will have to check again when I get a chance but all I was trying to do was thread it through the hole on the the actual pedal assembly, I did not see a hook. I will look for one perhaps that is what I am missing

From the side of the tunnel I have a hook that looks like the one on the right of this picture

it goes through the hole and connects to soemthing or just it just hook to the pedal itself?

Thanks again
