YACT - My car is possessed by an evil demon

Leaving best buy this morning, this happened:

as i am pulling out of the space, something doesnt feel right with the acceleration - engine revs with no response, then the car jolts forward. i notice the ABS light has come on. i pull over, and turn off the car hoping it will go away. (typical comuter geek restart fixes everything mentality). well i try to turn it back on and the engine wont turn over. i try a couple different times with no luck, but on the third try it finally catches. ABS light still on, same weird thing with the transmission; in D4, D3, 2, and even 1. it takes a long time for the gear to even engage or shift, so i end up just accelerating very slowly which seems to work. then i realize as i am driving i can feel the brakes "pulsing". thats hard to describe, but its that same pulse/shudder you feel from the ABS when you have to brake really hard. i would have just gotten it towed right there, but my cell phone was out of batteries and i was not in a very good state of mind. but i did make it home ok. other problems - radio wont turn on, power windows are operating at like 1/2 speed.

i dont know much about cars, but i am thinking this is some computer / electrical problem? i am going to check and see if there are any blown fuses tomorrow, but i think its probably more than that.

im going to get it checked out, but id like to see if anyone has had similar problems or can guess what might be wrong (or what i might be needing to have fixed).

thanks for any input

cliffs notes - my car = pnwed

6th gen accord has 3 major problem.

1. bad tranny
2. faulty alternator
3. stuck egr valve

it sounds like you may have a bad alternator which is pretty lucky since a lot of people have faulty transmission before the alternator goes.. if your alternator humms hard, it's probably it.. else you may have problem even getting the car to a shop to get it check out..

you can get reman alternator from honda or get alterstart
http://www.4alterstart.com/ - has higher wattage alternator w/ life warranty (additional cost)

goto v6performance.net's forum and read up on alterstart

its easier to get another honda one but it might not last.. im on my third honda alternator at 105k just fyi

Sounds like a good place to start, and it won't cost much to replace the battery to test the theory. If that's the original, it's due anyway. I believe Sears will do a "Power Team" check for about $20.00, which can be applied to the purchase price of the battery, if you buy it there. Maybe Walmart or Kmart has a similar deal. Certainly cheaper than having a mechanic troubleshoot it.

Oh, you'll probably have to charge or jump it to get it there, but it's worth the effort IMO.

i agree it's the battery or alternator

my friends grand am battery/alternator combo went bad and the car would run, with the gauges going insane, headlights and other stuff going nuts too.

engine of course would suffer eventually with no power the run the spark plugs, but the transmission thing you're describing did not happen

wow man, that sucks.... I thought that the honda's were supposed to be indestructable... must suck to pass on something RWD or over 250hp and still have to put up with reliablity issues

thanks guys. you know what, i thought i DID notice a lounder hum/buzz while idling over the past week. i thought it was just in my head though. but listening to this it sounds like it might be my alternator on the fritz. thanks for the post forcesho.

You confuse me. So if I would have bought something RWD with at least 250 horses I wouldn't have reliability issues? Or is it that all cars have reliability issues and some are just smaller then others? The biggest problems with my Accord are the distributor and the main relay. Both relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.

Also, I know nothing about cars, but if it is indeed the alternator, is this something I can do by myself? I know how to use tools; Im just not very knowledgeable but willing to learn. Basically is there any risk of either A) killing myself B) really f'ing up the car even more so

don't f!ck with the electrical system if you don't know what you're doing. that is all

No, I'm just saying that most people who choose not to get hondas/toyotas and splurge on more powerful or performance oriented cars make that choice in full knowledge that there will be reliability issues.... it's to be expected.

I'd be pissed as all sh!t if something like that happened to me after I already made the painful sacrafice in favor of what I thought was honda/toyota indestrucability. I have great respect for the reliability of those cars and I must admit that this is the first time I have EVER heard of someone having a serious issue with one (not to say it doesent happen, but I know no unhappy stock Civic or Camry owners)

alternator
had exactly the same problem.. abs light, airbag light, idle/tranny etc..
I have a 98 ex V6 as well.

every car has to have stuff fixed from time to time. the difference is with a lot of other cars you reach the point at which either the repairs come so fast that it costs too much to run the car, or something breaks that pretty much fries the car for good. for the most part, with hondas and toyotas, that day never comes. or at least the interior will have disintegrated and the body will have rusted off long before it comes.

Go to Adv Auto/Auto Zone and pick up the Haynes repair manual for your car. Gives very easy to follow instructions to replace the alternator. From my experience, replacing the alternator doesn't put you at risk for screwing the electrical system. Then again I've only worked on American cars 😉
