YACT: my car is going bonkers

i have a 89 toyota cressida with 88k miles on it and yes, my family is the original owner

i love the car, it has been trouble free and the ride is really smooth, the last relic of toyota before they created lexus

however, lately the engine has been erractic.

when i am driving it, the rpm would suddenly decrease for like half a second and the engine light would come on during that interval and go off. this happens repeatedly.

when i am idling, the engine would just go off, sometimes in less than 30sec, sometimes it doesnt

my first guess is that perhaps there is something that is blocking the passage for gas, thus not enough gas is going through

i need to have a diagnostic done on it and go from there 🙁

anybody had similar case and would provide some insights?

thank you in advance

You must extract any trouble codes first before doing anything else.

Go out and purchase a Haynes repair manual for the vehicle, look in the emissions section, there you will find trouble codes and how to extract them.

thanks for the advice but i am not very knowledgeable in car mechanics... thats why i was considering it taking for a diagnostic to see if the computer on the car will tell anything

Take it to autozone to get the codes, and then come back and tell Roger, and he'll lead you in the right direction.

Then you should do that.
