YACT: My brakes make funny noises in the rain

I had to do some semi hard braking a couple times today... and my brake pedal would vibrate and I heard a scraping noise apparently coming from the pedal area. Is this what it sounds like when wheels lock up? I don't have ABS.

Have you checked the brake pads? Usually scraping occurs when the pad is warn down. If it's just because of moisture, (i.e. during the rain) drive for a block or two with the pedal LIGHTLY depressed. That should dry 'em out pretty quick.

I would get them checked, usually scraping sounds and stuff are a signal you've let your breaks go too long without getting serviced

Could be rotor warp... the rain and heated rotors may be enough thermal shock to crack or warp your brake rotors.

EDIT: actually, high speed braking + sitting still in traffic for long periods of time promote warp/cracking. Water adds to thermal shock... like washing your car after being hard on the brakes.

When your wheels lockup, there should be no vibration from the brake pedal... it should feel like you're (the car) is sliding. I've locked up my brakes a few times racing so I generally try to avoid it... 😛😉

Could be time for a new set of rotors & pads if they are cracked/warped.

my disks get rusty fast and sound like they're grinding... i don't think its a good thing

Unless the rust seizes something, you're fine. Apply the brakes firmly a couple times and the rust should be effectively polished off. The rear drums in my old Accord would rust a little after the car had set for a few weeks at school, and the noise would go away after a few stops.

ABS makes a horatious racket. it could be the ABS. It fits with the noise and pedal pulsing.

sounds like it's worn to the metal.....

That's possible.... How often are brake pads usually changed?

A lot less often than every 6,000 miles. You sure you're not just locking up the brakes and the noise is tires sliding across pavement?

It sounded like a hard surface scraping on another hard surface, nothing like rubber sliding on pavement, which I would assume sounds like spinning tires (which also happened today on a hill 🙁 ). And it sounded like it was coming from the brake pedal, but that could be the front tires.

Tires spinning usually makes a squealing noise, locked up brakes on wet pavement make a noise more like dragging a heavy cardboard box across cement or something.

This will increase your braking efficiency by 25% and reduce wear by 40%.
I strongly suggest you attach it to either the frame or engine/transmission mounts.

That was the noise... So I guess it was the brakes locking. I was talking about spinning tires in the wet though, which is just a ptptptptpt sound for me.

In that case, brake softer and start braking farther from where you want to stop. If you're locking the brakes up, you're drivinbg too fast or stopping too quick for the conditions.

I had lots of room, I just wasn't sure how hard to brake. I hardly ever have to brake hard so I don't really know my breaks that well beyond the first 50%.

well, locking the brakes up is dangerous. You have no control over the car while the brakes are locked up, so just be careful.

scanning down the thread, i was trying to think of an analogy for that sound. the cardboard box one is dead on. no pun intended. 😉
